In this year, the census lists the post office as Jacksonville, TX, not Rusk. These two towns are just a few miles apart. George and Nancy had another child, Laura, presumably born before 1870, but she was not listed in 1870 for unknown reasons. She is, however, listed in 1880 as you will see below. In addition, John and Susan Atkins, George Morgan Atkins’ parents, were found in Beeville, Bee County, Texas, in 1870: 1870 Census Name Age Born In Notes John Atkins 73 ~1797 SC Occ: farmer Susan 64 ~1806 OH Benjamin 24 ~1846 TN Occ: farmer Jemima Odom 31 ~1839 TN Daughter of John Susan Odom 10 ~1860 TX Granddaughter of John 1880 This data shows that Jemima Atkins had married a man named Odom but he died of unknown causes and so Jemima and her daughter Susan were living with her parents John and Susan Atkins. The census data showed that Benjamin Atkins valued his personal estate at $3500 suggesting that the farm may have actually belonged to him. In 1880, Ira Bennett Atkins is found in Ferris, Ellis County, Texas, with a wife and two children, as follows: 1880 Census Name Age Born In Notes Ira B. Atkins 31 ~1849 TN Occ: carpenter Sarah J. 26 ~1854 MS William E. 7 ~1873 Charles B. 1 ~1889 Sarah is Sarah J. Brunson. Ira and Sarah were married in Texas in September 1870 after the 1870 census was taken. Ira continues this family line. In addition, Ira’s parents George M. (Morgan) Atkins and Miranda Atkins are found still living in Cherokee County, Texas, along with the last three of their children: 11 | P a g e

Atkins. This is Susannah Atkins, wife of John, who died between 1870 and 1880. B.B. Atkins is assumed to be Benjamin Bowen Atkins. The family lived in Bee Co, Texas. Odom 41 ~1839 TX Sister of B.B., widowed Since Mary A is a stepdaughter to B.B., it can be assumed that she was born to Martha J. prior to the marriage to B.B. This would make B.B. wife’s maiden name Martha J. Grandling. 1890 Most of the 1890 census data was destroyed in a fire in about 1921. This has created a 20 year gap between the 1880 census and the 1900 census. 1900 No records can be found in the 1900 census so far for: George M. Atkins even though it is thought he died after 1900 Ira Atkins, son of George The reason for this is unknown. Either they all were missed in the count (highly unlikely) or there is a major misspelling and they were recorded under a very different surname spelling, or perhaps census pages were lost.
