She married Thomas on 2 January 1817 in Blount County, Tennessee when she <strong>and</strong> Thomas<br />
were about 23 years old. They had 9 children, all born in Indiana, probably Lawrence County. It<br />
is not clear how <strong>the</strong>y married in TN while <strong>the</strong>ir firstborn child was born in Indiana.<br />
Nancy died on 7 August 1863 in Indiana at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> about 69. Soon <strong>the</strong>reafter, Thomas married<br />
Elizabeth Broadway on 24 November 1863 in Lawrence County, IN. Thomas was about 69 years<br />
old while Elizabeth was about 66. It is thought <strong>the</strong>y had no o<strong>the</strong>r children.<br />
Thomas died on 11 August 1870 in Indiana while Elizabeth died 14 February 1881 also in<br />
Indiana.<br />

The remainder <strong>of</strong> this report on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smith</strong> family will be based on US Census data. This data is<br />
quite accurate based on <strong>the</strong> way it was collected. The 1850 census is <strong>the</strong> first census to list<br />
individual family members <strong>and</strong> ages. Census data before 1850 listed only head <strong>of</strong> household <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> family members in various age groups.<br />
In 1850 a Thomas S. <strong>Smith</strong> is found living in Bono Township, Lawrence County, Indiana. He<br />
was a farmer <strong>and</strong> listed his real estate holdings at $1000. He was married to Nancy Farmer <strong>and</strong><br />
had a family as follows:<br />
