According to previous data, Thomas <strong>and</strong> Nancy married on 2 January 1817 in Blount County,<br />

Tennessee <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y had a total <strong>of</strong> 9 children.<br />

Also based on previous data, <strong>the</strong> “S” in Thomas’ census recording probably st<strong>and</strong>s for Shelton<br />

(or Sheldon) <strong>and</strong> that he was married twice, <strong>the</strong> second wife being Elizabeth Broadway, born in<br />

1797 <strong>and</strong> who married to Thomas on 24 November 1863 in Indiana.<br />

Comparing <strong>the</strong> family data prior to 1850 with <strong>the</strong> 1850 census, it seems that 5 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children had<br />

already left home <strong>and</strong> were on <strong>the</strong>ir own by 1850: William, Elias, James, Mary, <strong>and</strong> Lewis.<br />

In addition, a Lewis <strong>Smith</strong>, aged 24, was found working on a farm in Parke County, Indiana, in<br />

1850. Proper identification <strong>of</strong> Lewis is essential because it is Lewis <strong>Smith</strong> who carries on this<br />

family line.<br />

1860<br />

In 1860, Thomas <strong>Smith</strong> <strong>and</strong> wife Nancy are found still living in Bono Township, Lawrence<br />

County, IN. He was as farmer <strong>and</strong> he stated <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> his real estate was $1300 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> value<br />

<strong>of</strong> his personal property was $700. No o<strong>the</strong>r data is available. Here is <strong>the</strong> family:<br />
