Joseph Smith
There is a conflict of information about the Joseph Smith generation. Some sources report one
wife, some report two. I have found information proving two wives so that will be the
assumption here. In both cases, however, a son, John Andrew Smith, is found and he carries on
the family line.
Joseph Smith married Rachel Wildman in 1743 in Bucks Co, PA. Rachel was born 17 January
1725 in Bucks Co. Joseph was about 22 years old, Rachel was about 18. Rachel died on
unknown date (one source reports she died on 4 December 1760 at the age of about 35). Joseph
later remarried. Joseph’s second wife was Phoebe Hibbs born in Bucks Co in 1732.
One source states that Rachel died on the same day that Joseph married Phoebe. While possible,
this is not likely.
Joseph’s marriage to Rachel is documented in a database titled US and International Marriage
Record 1560-1900. His marriage to Phoebe is documented in a database titled Pennsylvania Vital
records Vol I. In the marriage to Phoebe, Joseph is identified as a widower. It shows that they
were married in the Reformed Dutch Church in Churchville, Bucks Co, PA, on 4 December
1760.
