Voice Elysabeth Muscat, Voice Department Chair emuscat1@jhu.edu Basics of Singing 1 (Ages 9–11) This class provides a supportive environment where children learn to use their voices correctly and apply healthy, age-appropriate techniques for good vocal development. It is for children who love to sing and receive instruction in vocal technique, sight-singing, and song preparation in a small group setting. Minimum of four students. Students receive instruction in vocal technique, sight-singing, basic foreign language diction, and song preparation in a small group setting. Class culminates with an informal presentation by the students. Students should bring a recording device to class. Minimum of four students. Emphasis will be placed on connecting the meaning, color and expressive power of the words. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will be used as a means of presenting and reinforcing the "sonic vocabulary" of the language. WOODWIND, BRASS AND PERCUSSION Academy Elijah Wirth, Director Downtown, 410-234-4630 The Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Academy brings together highly motivated students at the upper-intermediate and advanced levels to grow in a collaborative and challenging environment. The Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Academy nurtures students' musical and personal growth through individual instruction, ensembles, performance opportunities master classes, enrichment activities, special events, career guidance and feedback. The curriculum prepares students for college and professional level studies. As such, the program is for students who want to pursue a career in music, and for students with other professional aspirations for whom music is their major non-academic endeavor. Academy classes take place on Saturdays at the Peabody downtown campus in the heart of Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood. Students must commit to the complete curriculum and attend classes and rehearsals weekly. Exact schedules may vary based on ensemble needs and theory class placement, but most schedules would be similar to those posted on the following page. In addition, students will receive weekly 45, 60 or 90 minute individual instruction lessons with a member of the Peabody woodwind, brass or percussion faculty. Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Academy Auditions Saturday, August 17, 3:00-5:00, L119, Wirth Continuing Preparatory Students: Call the Preparatory Office to schedule a Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Academy audition. New Students: Register for individual instruction (see pp. 6-7) and call the Preparatory Office at 410-234-4630 to schedule a Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Academy audition and placement interview. Audition Requirements Woodwind and Brass instruments: Scales C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Ab and Chromatic Scale Repertoire Performance of two contrasting works, one must be technical, one must ve lyrical, legato solo. At least one of the solos must demonstrate slurs. Percussion instruments: I. Snare Drum Technique Long concert roll from pianissimo to fortissimo and back to pianissimo Paradiddles (alternated series), Flams (alternated series), Ruffs (drags), Flam taps, Flam accents Repertoire Solo of at least 32 measures in length. Solo must include rolls and dynamic contrasts. Suitable solos can be chosen from Intermediate Snare Drum Studies (Mitchell Peters), Portraits in Rhythm (Anthony Cirone), or any of the Jacques Delecluse books of snare drum études. II. Mallets or Timpani (Students choose one or the other) Mallet Instrument (xylophone or marimba): Scales Bb, Eb, F, C, G, D and Chromatic Scale Repertoire Solo of at least 24 measures in length. Suitable solos can be chosen from Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba and Vibraphone (Goldenberg), Percussion Keyboard Technique (McMillan), or any other comparable mallet étude book. Timpani: Tuning Bb, Eb and F, using a pitch reference Technique Long concert roll from pianissimo to fortissimo back to pianissimo on all three tuned drums. Repertoire Solo of at least 24 measures in length. Suitable solos may be chosen from Modern Method for Timpani (Saul Goodman) or any comparable method/étude book.
