Large Ensembles
Maestra Marin Alsop. The Chorus joined the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra again in 2011 for a performance of
Honegger’s Joan of Arc in Carnegie Hall, New York City,
and will sing with the Morgan State University Choir for
the 2013 BSO production of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. In
2012, our Chorus also joined with Lyric Opera Baltimore
for their production of Puccini’s La Bohème.
During a 2011 tour of Italy, the Chorus gave concerts in
Florence and Lucca, and performed mass at the Vatican,
Rome and St. Mark’s Cathedral, Venice. In the summer of
2013, eighty students from the Chorus will tour France,
performing at the American Cemetery in Normandy on
July 4th and singing mass in Notre Dame Cathedral; they
will also be featured in the Dimanches Musicaux de La
Madeleine Concert Series, Paris.

Membership in the various orchestras is by audition
only. Everyone is welcome to audition for the orchestras
whether or not the student studies at the Preparatory.
Peabody Youth Orchestra

Open to advanced musicians in all strings, woodwinds,
brass, and percussion of middle through high school age.
The Peabody Youth Orchestra is the premiere advanced
ensemble in the Preparatory Orchestra program, concentrating
on standard orchestral repertoire. Two or three
full-length concerts are given each year, including performances
with faculty and guest artists as well as the
winner of the Preparatory Concerto Competition.
Recent repertoire for 2012-2013 has included Dukas:
The Sorcerer's Apprentice; Mendelssohn: Concert No. 1 in
g minor, Op. 25; de Meij: Symphony No. 1 "The Lord of the
Rings"; Berlioz: The Roman Carnival Overture, No. 9; Saint
Saëns: Morceau de Concert for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 154;
Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34; Debussy:
Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun; and Tchaikovsky: The
1812 Overture "Overture Solenelle", Op. 49. From 2011-2012,
repertoire included: Verdi: La Forza del Destino Overture,
Bizet: L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2 from the Incidental Music and
Bruch: Concerto No. 1 for Violin and Piano in g minor, Op. 26;
Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 2; Tchaikovsky:
Symphony No. 2, “Little Russian” and Symphony No. 5.
Repertoire from the 2010-2011 season included: Brahms:
Tragic Overture, Op. 81; Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals
(featuring Monica Ly and Zehu Hao, piano); and Hanson:
Symphony No. 2, Op. 30, "Romantic". Membership is by
audition only and previous orchestral experience is
required. Everyone is welcome to audition for the Peabody
Youth Orchestra whether or not the student studies at
the Preparatory. Only students in individual instruction at
the Preparatory are eligible to participate in recitals and
competitions, including the Concerto Competition.
An additional $15 non-refundable materials/activities
fee per semester will automatically be charged with
registration.

of the 2012-2013 Preparatory Youth Orchestra must schedule
an audition appointment for the 2013-2014 academic

Audition Requirements
Performance of a solo piece that includes a technical passage
and a lyrical passage or a piece from the Preparatory
Advanced Certificate Program level (memorization not
required); Orchestral excerpt (download online at http://
www.peabody.jhu.edu/preparatory/pyoauditions.html);
selected scales including chromatic scales and keys
through four sharps and flats, range appropriate for the
instrument (two octaves minimum). Students auditioning
for both orchestra and chamber music should prepare
the audition repertoire as indicated above and should
also prepare a contrasting solo work as indicated in the
chamber music audition requirements.
Recommended Minimum Repertoire Levels
Violin: Bruch: Concerto in g minor or Mozart: Concerto
No. 3; Viola: Hoffmeister or Händel: Concerto; Cello: Haydn:
Concerto in C Major; Double Bass: By teacher recommendation;
Brass, Winds, and Percussion: Grade 4, 5, or 6 (MBDA)
Playing the recommended repertoire does not guarantee
acceptance.
