SMS Institute of Technology, L ucknow Indian Engineering Services (IES) Department of Electronics & Co mmunication Saurabh Sharma EC - III year Indian Engineering Services (IES) constitutes of engineers that work under the government of India to manage a large segment of publ ic sector economy which constitutes of Railroads, Public works, Power , Telecommunications,etc. A combined competitive examination is conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engine ering Services. The examination constitutes of a written examination followed by an interview for personality test. The recruitment of qualified candidates are made under the following categories: ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING The service offers to electron ics and communication engineeriner- (i) Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers. (ii) Indian Railway Stores Service. (iii) Indian Ordinance Factories Service. (iv) Indian Naval Armament Service. (v) Assistant Executive Engine er (in Ministry of Defence). (vi) Engineer in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organisation. (vii) Assistant Naval Stores officer (in Indian Navy). (viii) Survey of India Service. (I) ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS (i) Age limits: 21-30 years as on 1.8.2011(FOR 2011 EXAM). (Upper age limit relaxable for SCs/Sts, OBCs and certain other categories as specified in the Notice). (II) EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in Engineering or equivalent in any discipline, M.Sc Degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject also acceptable for certain posts. (See Notice in the Employment News). HOW TO APPLY Application form: • The application form is common for all their examinations which will be processed on computerized machines. • The application packet contains, the Application form, information brochure, an acknowledgment card, and an envelope for sending the Application. • The Application is available at designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices throughout the country. The form should be purchased from the designated Post Offices only. • This form can be used only once and for only one examination. • A photocopy/reproduction/unauthorized printed copy of the form is not allowed. • Acknowledgment cards with a postage stamp of Rs. 6/- should accompany the application form. • The name of examination, should be written on the envelope. Written Examination • The application packet will co n- tain the detailed instruction for filling the application form. EXAMINATION PATTERN The entrance for Indian Engineering Service comprises of a Written Exam (Section I and II) and an Interview. The details follow: • One Engineering Discipline should be chosen from the following categories: o Civil Engineering o Mechanical Engineering o Electrical Engineering o Electronics and communication Engineering • The written examination will comprise two sections: o Section I - objective types o questions Section II – conventional (essay) type question papers. • Both Sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering subject. INTERVIEW Interview for Personality test of selected candidates: 200 mark. GENERAL (BUT IMPORTANT) INSTRUCTIONS • All Question Papers must be Answered in English. The image - which was obtained using a scanning tunnelling microscope - shows the electronic wave functions inside an elliptical "quantum corral" made of cobalt atoms on a copp er surface. It was created by Har i Manoharan, Christopher Lutz and Don Eigler of the IBM Almaden Rese arch Center in California. In 1990, working with Erhard Schweizer, Eiger spelt out the letters "IBM" using 35 xenon atoms. And three years later, wo rking with Lutz and Michael Crommie, he released the first images of the "quantum corral", which have also been reproduced in numerous places. All moving particles have a wavelike nature. This is rarely significant on an everyday scale. But in atom ic dimensions, where distances are measured in nanometers, moving particles behave like waves. This phenomenon is what makes the electron mic roscope workable. It is of inter est to researchers in nanotechnology, who are looking for ways to deliver electric currents through circuits too small for conventional wiring. The term quantum mirage refers to a phenomenon that may make it possible to transfer data without conventional elec trical wiring. Instead of forcing charge carriers through solid conductors, a process impractical on a microscopic scale, electron wave phenomena are made to produce effective currents. A quantum mirage is a peculiar result in quantum chaos. Every system of quantum dynamical billiards will exhibit an effect called scarring, where the quantum probability density shows traces of the paths a classical billiard ball would take. For an elliptical arena, the scarring is particularly pronounced at the foci, as this is the region where many classical trajectories converge. The scars at the foci are coll oquially referred to as the "quantum mirage". They are two dimensional struc - tures built atom by atom (usin g approximately 30-80 atoms) on at omically smooth metallic surfaces using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Once the corrals are built, th e STM can be used to study these nan ometer scale structures with atomic resolution in space and better tha n meV (micro electron Volt) resolution in energy. The data of the STM can be rendered in false color to pro duce breathtaking images that reveal standing wave patterns of coherent electrons inside the corrals. The presence or absence of a quantum mirage might be used t o represent one bit of data in a region far smaller than any current electronic device can manage. It has the potential to enable data transfer within future nano-scale electronic circuits so small that conventional wires do not work.
