Biometrics
HUMAN body is a precious and
unique gift to all of us. Have you
ever imagine that our human bo dy
can be used as a security lock or to
identify someone. But now, at this
time, this dream has turned in to a
vast era of technology. This real part
of life is known as Biometrics .Biometrics
is all about using this unique feature
of human body for security purpose
or for other applications. for Biometrics
refers to use of unique physiological
characteristics to identify an
individual. While it is mainly concerned
with security, it also has some another
useful applications.
INTRODUCTION
Biometrics is defined as the science
and technology of measuring and analyzing
biological data. In information
technology, biometrics refers to technologies
that measure and analyze human
body characteristics such as DNA,
fingerprints, eye retinas and irises,
voice patterns, facial pattern s and
hand measurements, for authentication
purposes. A number of biometric
traits have been developed and are
used to authenticate the perso n's
identity. The idea is to use the special
characteristics of a person to identify
him. By using special characteristics we
mean the using the features such as
face, iris, fingerprint, signature etc.
WHY BIOMETRICS?
The biometrics techniques are
preferred over traditional pas swords
and PIN based methods for vari ous
reasons such as: The person t o be
identified is required to be physically
Identification based on biometric techniques
obviates the need to remember
a password or carry a toke n. A
biometric system is essentially a pattern
recognition system which makes
a personal identification by determining
the authenticity of a specific physiological
or behavioral charact eristic
possessed by the user.
TYPES OF BIOMETRICS
Based on the application, Biometrics
system can be broadly classified
into two categories that are:
