certificateprograms HEALTH CARE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM CUNY Health Care Interpreter certificate Program (English/Spanish) PrerequisiteS for the Certificate: Students must pass an entrance test for bilingual fluency (English and Spanish); High School diploma or GED; Basic computer skills and access to the Internet. This certificate program prepares you to work as a health care interpreter on a full-time, part-time or freelance basis in a variety of medical facilities. This course incorporates materials used by Culture Smart, an organization specializing in medical interpreter training, and prepares you for the Language Line Interpreter Skills Test. Career Opportunities Recent NYC legislation requires Health Care Interpreters to have 45 hours of formal training. As more people earn these credentials, the competition will soon make it necessary for Health Care Interpreters to have college degrees, as well as training, to successfully compete for jobs. Currently there is work available for Health Care Interpreters on a full-time, part-time, or freelance basis, in a hospital setting, a physician’s office, a health care facility, or related medical organization. Salaries range from $33,000 to $40,000 a year. certificate programs Level 1 - Introduction to Spanish/ English Health Care Interpreting This course provides a basic understanding of the role of the interpreter in health care settings. Students learn skills and techniques used in consecutive interpreting, such as managing the flow of communication; recognizing and dealing with ethical issues and conflicts; active listening; memory-building and recall; and checking for accuracy. Topics covered include the culture of American health care; roles and expectations of clinicians; and health beliefs and practices in the Spanish-speaking community. Role-playing and other exercises will be used to build your interpreting skills, your medical vocabulary, and your personal bilingual glossary of words and terms frequently encountered in health care interpreting. SPRING SECTION 9 Sessions; 45 Hours $950 Saturdays 9:00AM - 2:00PM April 21 - June 23 ME112A-1SD Level 2 - Healthcare Concepts & Terminology for Interpreters (40 hours) Prerequisite: Level 1 This course focuses on the specialized vocabulary of health care, including English-language terms used to describe the human body’s parts and systems, as well as the name of diseases, common medications, treatments, medical equipment and procedures. The textbook for this course will be Quick and Easy Medical Terminology, 6th Edition, by Peggy Leonard. This textbook/workbook contains extensive exercises, to help students learn the English terms introduced, with an emphasis on recognizing root words from Latin and Greek that recur often in technical terms. certificateprograms MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM PrerequisiteS: High School diploma or GED; passing grades in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) This two-semester, 102 hour certificate program prepares you for an entry level position as a Medical Administrative Assistant in a doctor’s office, hospital, health insurance company, or medical billing service agency. Upon successful completion of the certificate program you will have a working knowledge of the medical billing industry, including medical terminology, and HIPPA regulations. CERTIFICATE COURSE REQUIREMENTS Medical Terminology & Basic Pharmacology This course provides an overview of the impact of drugs on the major systems of the human body. Topics covered include the five drug schedules of controlled substances and how to understand difficult medical terms by breaking them down into their fundamental components. SPRING SECTION 10 Sessions; 30 Hours $365 Mondays & Wednesdays 6:15 - 9:15PM April 23 - May 23 ME113-1MWE Bookkeeping & Accounting Concepts This course teaches students all the financial terms and procedures involved in operating a medical practice, including: income, expenses, accounts receivable, accrual accounting, write-off adjustments, and medical business record maintenance. PrerequisiteS: ME113, ME114, ME116 SPRING SECTION 5 Sessions; 15 Hours $169 Mondays & Wednesdays 6:15 - 9:15PM February 13 - February 27 ME118-1MWE Medical Office Procedures & Medical Records This course teaches you all the medical language you need to generate accurate medical records. Students learn the meaning of new word elements and how to use these elements to understand medical terms. You will also learn medical terms that apply to the different structures of the human body. SUMMER SECTION 7 Sessions; 21 Hours $179 Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:15 - 9:15PM June 7 - June 28 ME114-1THE Overview of the Health Care System This course provides an overview of the health care system, including a basic introduction to various types of medical institutions and offices. Students will learn personal/professional, medical/legal, and bio-ethical standards, different types of health insurance, as well as the importance of safeguarding confidentiality- HIPPA compliance. In addition, students will develop an understanding of the term HMO and be able to interpret information included on a patient’s insurance card. PrerequisiteS: ME113, ME114 SPRING SECTION 7 Sessions; 21 Hours $179 Mondays & Wednesdays 6:15 - 9:15PM January 18 - February 8 ME116-1MWE Communication & Customer Service In this course, you will become familiar with the various types of written correspondence in a medical office. You will learn proper telephone and office etiquette and the importance of patient sensitivity.
