MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM<br />

PrerequisiteS: High School diploma or GED; passing grades in Micros<strong>of</strong>t Office applications (Word, Excel)<br />

This two-semester, 102 hour certificate program prepares you for an entry level position as a Medical Administrative<br />

Assistant in a doctor’s <strong>of</strong>fice, hospital, health insurance company, or medical billing service agency. Upon successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the certificate program you will have a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> the medical billing industry, including<br />

medical terminology, and HIPPA regulations.<br />

Medical Terminology & Basic<br />

Pharmacology<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the impact <strong>of</strong> drugs<br />

on the major systems <strong>of</strong> the human body. Topics covered<br />

include the five drug schedules <strong>of</strong> controlled substances<br />

and how to understand difficult medical terms by breaking<br />

them down into their fundamental components.<br />

This course teaches students all the financial terms and<br />

record maintenance.<br />

Medical Records<br />

This course teaches you all the medical language you<br />

need to generate accurate medical records. Students learn<br />

the meaning <strong>of</strong> new word elements and how to use these<br />

elements to understand medical terms. You will also learn<br />

medical terms that apply to the different structures <strong>of</strong> the<br />

human body.<br />

Overview <strong>of</strong> the Health Care System<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the health care<br />

system, including a basic introduction to various types<br />

<strong>of</strong> medical institutions and <strong>of</strong>fices. Students will learn<br />

personal/pr<strong>of</strong>essional, medical/legal, and bio-ethical<br />

standards, different types <strong>of</strong> health insurance, as well<br />

as the importance <strong>of</strong> safeguarding confidentiality-<br />

HIPPA compliance. In addition, students will develop an<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the term HMO and be able to interpret<br />

information included on a patient’s insurance card.<br />
