certificateprograms CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS CASAC CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Credentialed Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counselor Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED This certificate program provides the 350 hours of instruction required by New York State and is designed to be completed in 3 semesters. The program has been approved by OASAS (the Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services). Our CASAC certificate program is for people who want to become alcohol and drug prevention specialists or substance abuse counselors in schools, treatment facilities, or social service agencies. Classes are divided into four sections: 1. 85 hours related to learning about alcoholism and substance abuse 2.150 hours related to alcoholism/substance abuse counseling 3. 70 hours related to assessment, clinical evaluations, treatment planning, case management, educating the client’s family about alcoholism and/or substance abuse and community education/awareness 4. 45 hours related to the professional and ethical responsibilities of a counselor Upon completion of the program students will have met the NYS requirements to take the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor examination. Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part II (Group) Group counseling is thought by many to be the most effective and efficient mode of counseling. It is also the most difficult form of counseling for the facilitator. This course will review the necessary components of all therapeutic groups with emphasis on group cohesion, “here and now” orientation, and process illumination. The role and mindset of the facilitator will be discussed. SPRING SECTION 10 Sessions; 35 Hours $399 Mondays 6:00 - 9:30PM February 27 - April 30 CASAC4-1ME COMPLETE CERTIFICATE COURSE REQUIREMENTS The Overview Alcoholism: A Primary Disease Assessing and Treating the Dually Diagnosed Client Relapse Prevention and Special Client Populations Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part I (Individual) Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part II (Group) Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part III (Family) Treatment Applications for the Substance Abuse Professional Physical Aspects of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism Ethics and Professional Conduct Treatment Applications for the Substance Abuse Professionals This class is designed to prepare the student for the everyday tasks of being a substance abuse counselor. The separate, but interconnected components of the treatment process will be discussed in order to provide a comprehensive framework for practicing as a counselor. Special emphasis will be given to the following tasks: orientation, assessment, treatment planning, case management, and educating the client about his or her problem. SPRING SECTION 10 Sessions; 35 Hours $399 Wednesdays 6:00 - 9:30PM February 8 - April 11 CASAC702-1WE Counseling the Chemically Dependent, Part III (Family) Many therapy professionals consider addiction to be a “family disease” because of the impact and transformative power of addiction on the entire family. The course will focus on the theories of the three pioneers in the field of family counseling for the chemically dependent: Satir, Bowens, and Minuchin. The goal of the course is to develop a unified approach to family counseling. SUMMER SECTION 10 Sessions; 35 Hours $399 Mondays & Wednesdays 6:00 - 9:30PM May 14 - June 18 CASAC5-1MWE 8 THE CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Relapse Prevention & Special Client Populations The course will begin with a discussion of the nature of addiction and will then review both internal and external factors that may cause a relapse. Four models of relapse prevention in a treatment setting will be examined: 1) 12 Step Programs; 2) Rational-Emotive therapy; 3) Cognitive Behavioral therapy; and 4) Cenaps (T. Gorski) This theoretical foundation will then be put into practice through role-playing in the classroom. certificateprograms Physical Aspects of Substance Abuse & Alcoholism This course examines the physical effects of alcohol and drugs on the human body. Students will learn how the human body processes drugs and alcohol beginning with the administration of the drug and ingestion of alcohol to their elimination. SUMMER SECTION Assessing & Treating the Dually Diagnosed Chemical Abuse Client This class is essential for understanding and treating people who suffer from both mental illness and alcoholism. The importance of concurrent rather than sequential treatment of these disorders cannot be overemphasized. Professional counselors must be prepared to recognize and respond to the unique spectrum of needs of this 10 Sessions; 35 Hours Tuesdays & Thursdays May 15 - June 14 $399 6:00 - 9:30PM CASAC2-1THE fast-growing population of clients. SPRING SECTION 10 Sessions; 35 Hours $399 Thursdays 6:00 - 9:30PM February 9 - April 12 CASAC110-1HE CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) CERTIFICATE PLUS PROGRAM Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED; CNA orientation; assessment test. This NY State approved 130-hour program provides students with classroom instruction and a clinical internship in a nursing home. Course work includes Anatomy and Physiology, Fundamentals of Patient Care and a CNA internship. PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Already an LPN, CNA, or other patient care professional? This course can add to your skill set, teaching you the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries. For those already employed as phlebotomists, this course will help you build on your skills. SPRING SECTION 27 Sessions; 80 Hours $799 Monday - Thursday 6:00 - 9:00PM March 12 - April 25 ME206-1MTWHE ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY (EKG) CERTIFICATE PROGRAM This course will introduce students to the techniques necessary to perform a 12–lead resting electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) – a vital tool in identifying heart problems. Students will also learn about normal heart rhythm and arrhythmia, basic cardiac physiology, as well as how to troubleshoot technical problems with an ECG/EKG. SPRING SECTION 9 Sessions; 45 Hours $399 Monday - Thursday 6:00 - 9:00PM May 7 - May 30 ME307-1MTWHE SUMMER SECTION 26 Sessions; 130 Hours $995 Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 9:00 - 2:00PM June 4 - August 16 ME209-1MWH CPR (Adult) - CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION TRAINING The value of this course is only understood when CPR is needed – and then it is priceless. The course teaches you the skills necessary to help an adult who has stopped breathing, is choking or having a heart attack, or whose pulse has stopped. Upon successful completion of the course you will receive an adult CPR license, valid for one year.
