Instructions for Authors<br />

Mission of the Journal<br />

Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r is the peer re<strong>view</strong>ed<br />

publication of the International Association of Medical<br />

Science Educa<strong>to</strong>rs (<strong>IAMSE</strong>). The Journal offers all who<br />

teach <strong>in</strong> healthcare the most current <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion <strong>to</strong><br />

succeed <strong>in</strong> their task by publish<strong>in</strong>g scholarly activities,<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions, and resources <strong>in</strong> medical science education.<br />

Published articles focus on teach<strong>in</strong>g the sciences<br />

fundamental <strong>to</strong> modern medic<strong>in</strong>e and health, and <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

basic science education, cl<strong>in</strong>ical teach<strong>in</strong>g, and the use of<br />

modern education technologies.<br />

Manuscript criteria<br />

Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r considers all manuscripts on<br />

the strict condition that they are the property (copyright)<br />

of the submitt<strong>in</strong>g author(s), have been submitted only <strong>to</strong><br />

Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r, that they have not been<br />

published already, nor are they under consideration for<br />

publication, nor <strong>in</strong> press elsew<strong>here</strong>. Medical Science<br />

Educa<strong>to</strong>r considers all manuscripts at the Edi<strong>to</strong>rs'<br />

discretion; the Edi<strong>to</strong>rs' decision is f<strong>in</strong>al.<br />

Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vites the follow<strong>in</strong>g types of<br />

submissions: Short Communication, Orig<strong>in</strong>al Research,<br />

Innovation, Op<strong>in</strong>ion, Commentary, Monograph, Medical<br />

Education Case Report, Letter <strong>to</strong> the Edi<strong>to</strong>r, Re<strong>view</strong> and<br />

Meet<strong>in</strong>g Report. All parts of the manuscript must be<br />

available <strong>in</strong> an electronic <strong>format</strong>; those recommended are:<br />

generic rich text <strong>format</strong> (RTF) or Microsoft Word for text,<br />

and JPEG for graphics. Papers not correctly <strong>format</strong>ted<br />

will be returned <strong>to</strong> the authors for correction and<br />

resubmission. Manuscripts should be submitted through<br />

the website. The manuscript should be double-spaced<br />

with a wide marg<strong>in</strong> (at least 3 cm) on either side. All pages<br />

should be numbered. Do not use abbreviations. All<br />

scientific units should be expressed <strong>in</strong> SI units. Before<br />

submission please remove fields from au<strong>to</strong>matic<br />

referenc<strong>in</strong>g programs and switch off change track<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Please supply a word count. W<strong>here</strong> figures, tables or<br />

illustrations from other publications have been used,<br />

appropriate permissions should be obta<strong>in</strong>ed prior <strong>to</strong><br />

submission. Referenc<strong>in</strong>g should be set out <strong>in</strong> double<br />

spac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Vancouver style. References are <strong>to</strong> be listed<br />

numerically by order of appearance <strong>in</strong> the text, and<br />

should be <strong>in</strong>dicated by the superscripted number of the<br />

reference immediately follow<strong>in</strong>g punctuation. Please see<br />

a sample article for your convenience.<br />

Manuscripts should be prepared <strong>in</strong> accordance with the<br />

Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted <strong>to</strong><br />

Biomedical Journals (see http://www.icmje.org/) and the<br />

Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Code of<br />

Conduct (see http://publicationethics.org/). Authors are<br />

responsible for all statements made <strong>in</strong> their work.<br />

When authors report experiments that <strong>in</strong>volve human<br />

subjects, an <strong>in</strong>dication of <strong>in</strong>stitutional Internal Re<strong>view</strong><br />

Board (IRB) approval or exemption should be <strong>in</strong>dicated,<br />

either <strong>in</strong> the text of the manuscript or directly <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Edi<strong>to</strong>r-<strong>in</strong>-Chief. When <strong>in</strong>formed consent has been<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed it should be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the paper. If <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

consent has not been obta<strong>in</strong>ed then the anonymity of the<br />

subject must be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

Edi<strong>to</strong>rial and peer re<strong>view</strong> process<br />

All submitted manuscripts are read <strong>in</strong>itially by the Edi<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>-Chief.<br />

One or more Associate Edi<strong>to</strong>rs may also be<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> early decision mak<strong>in</strong>g. Papers with<br />

<strong>in</strong>sufficient priority for publication are rejected at this<br />

stage – sometimes with advice about resubmission <strong>in</strong> a<br />

different category. Other manuscripts are sent <strong>to</strong> experts<br />

<strong>in</strong> the field for peer re<strong>view</strong>. The re<strong>view</strong> process is usually<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle-bl<strong>in</strong>ded so that re<strong>view</strong>ers’ identities are not<br />

disclosed. We aim <strong>to</strong> give an <strong>in</strong>itial decision with<strong>in</strong> 10<br />

weeks.<br />

Proofs<br />

All accepted manuscripts are edited accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Journal’s style. Proofs for approval will be sent <strong>to</strong> the<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>g author via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF file.<br />

Authors are required <strong>to</strong> provide corrections promptly<br />

with<strong>in</strong> 4 days; if you are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be out of email contact<br />

for an extended period, please supply us with the contact<br />

details of someone who can attend <strong>to</strong> the proofs <strong>in</strong> your<br />

absence.<br />

Copyright Regulations<br />

For accepted papers copyright will be transferred <strong>to</strong> the<br />

<strong>journal</strong> Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>IAMSE</strong>. To<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and protect the Author's and Association's<br />

ownership and rights and <strong>to</strong> afford educa<strong>to</strong>rs with the<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> publish <strong>in</strong> Medical Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r,<br />

<strong>IAMSE</strong> requires that the first author assigns a copyright<br />

agreement <strong>to</strong> <strong>IAMSE</strong> on behalf of all the authors at the<br />

time of submission of a manuscript. In this copyright<br />

transfer agreement, <strong>IAMSE</strong> grants <strong>to</strong> the author and all<br />

co-authors, the rights <strong>to</strong> republish any part of their article<br />

<strong>in</strong> secondary publications (pr<strong>in</strong>t, CD-ROM, and other<br />

electronic <strong>format</strong>s) for which they are authors, on the<br />

condition that credit is noted for the orig<strong>in</strong>al Medical<br />

Science Educa<strong>to</strong>r publication. This copyright also extends<br />

<strong>to</strong> cover all artwork, pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and any other<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellectual property published <strong>in</strong> the <strong>journal</strong>.<br />
