ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM<br />

JULY 20<strong>10</strong> TO JUNE 2011<br />

Objectives<br />

• To provide Oral Health services to the Aboriginal community serviced by <strong>WAMS</strong><br />

• Reduce the incidence of dental diseases experienced by the Aboriginal population<br />

serviced by <strong>WAMS</strong><br />

• To provide data related to dental service provision and utilisation, including demographic<br />

and epidemiological data.<br />

• Contribute to the improved general health of the Aboriginal population by improving<br />

oral health care.<br />

Activities<br />

<strong>WAMS</strong> has continued to provide oral health services to the people of Walgett and surrounding<br />

areas. As the only dental clinic in town, it provides dental care to Aboriginal and non-<br />

Aboriginal people.<br />

During this financial year, <strong>WAMS</strong> engaged eight Dentists:<br />

Dr Thien-Nhien Nguyen 13 -24 September (2 weeks)<br />

Dr Rick Smyth 4 - 30 October (4 weeks)<br />

Dr Lea Foster 1 -12 November (2 weeks)<br />

Dr Bill Diebert 15 - 26 November (2 weeks)<br />

Dr Lea Foster 29 November - 9 December (2 weeks)<br />

Dr Steve Naoum 13 -17 December (1 week)<br />

Dr Michael Prochazka 7 - 25 February (3 weeks)<br />

Dr Lea Foster 28 Feb - 11 March (2 weeks)<br />

<strong>WAMS</strong> also engaged the services of a Dental Prosthesist, Mr Peter Muller from Dubbo, in<br />

March 2011. Mr Muller visited <strong>WAMS</strong> for two days per month, and provided much needed<br />

denture care to the people of Walgett.<br />

There was a Dentist at <strong>WAMS</strong> for a total of twenty nine and a half (29.5) weeks in this year.<br />

Apart from Drs Nguyen, Foster and Bourke, all the dentists have worked previously with<br />

<strong>WAMS</strong>.<br />

We are very grateful to these Dentists for their commitment to our dental program and their<br />

enthusiasm for the organisation and the community.<br />

There were seven weeks of dental therapy services for school children. Dental Therapists<br />

Ms Shlat and McGibbon worked for <strong>WAMS</strong> on secondment from the previous South Eastern<br />

Sydney Illawarra Health Service and Western Sydney Area Health Service respectively. Ms<br />
