Mighty Zeus, Cyclopes, Giants and various Monstrosities <strong>in</strong> a spectacular battle scene from <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Titans<br />

Cosmogony<br />

<strong>The</strong> Birth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World<br />

In <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re was only Chaos. <strong>The</strong>n came<br />

Gaia, <strong>the</strong> Earth, and Ouranos, <strong>the</strong> Sky. <strong>The</strong>ir union<br />

produced twelve mighty children, <strong>the</strong> Titans, as well<br />

as some misshapen ones, marked with <strong>the</strong> ta<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

primal Chaos, among which were <strong>the</strong> first Cyclopes.<br />

Those grotesque monsters <strong>of</strong>fended Ouranos’ sight,<br />

so he decided to drive <strong>the</strong>m below <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

earth, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> deepest recesses <strong>of</strong> Gaia’s womb.<br />

This caused Gaia’s wrath and <strong>the</strong> irremediable<br />

sunder<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two entities: from this moment <strong>of</strong><br />

anger, earth and sky were forever separated.<br />

Gaia began to plot aga<strong>in</strong>st Ouranos, try<strong>in</strong>g to sow<br />

<strong>the</strong> seeds <strong>of</strong> rebellion among her children… but<br />

even <strong>the</strong> mightiest Titans were afraid <strong>of</strong> Ouranos.<br />

Only <strong>the</strong> youngest one, Kronos, decided to act<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st his fa<strong>the</strong>r. Us<strong>in</strong>g a magical golden sickle<br />

given to him by Gaia, Kronos attacked Ouranos,<br />

castrat<strong>in</strong>g him and wound<strong>in</strong>g him mortally. Ouranos’<br />

blood fell to <strong>the</strong> earth, where it spawned ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

generation <strong>of</strong> fantastic be<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first<br />

Giants, <strong>the</strong> first Nymphs and <strong>the</strong> Greater Furies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Reign <strong>of</strong> Kronos<br />

After <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Ouranos, Kronos became <strong>the</strong><br />

supreme ruler <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe upon which he<br />

imposed his Law – which is called Time.<br />

Kronos <strong>the</strong>n imprisoned <strong>the</strong> Cyclopes and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

chaotic be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark subterranean realm <strong>of</strong><br />

Tartarus. He <strong>the</strong>n married his own sister Rhea but<br />

ate his own children as soon as <strong>the</strong>y were born,<br />

fear<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y would one day try to destroy him,<br />

just like he had overthrown and sla<strong>in</strong> his own fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Just before giv<strong>in</strong>g birth to her sixth child, Rhea went<br />

<strong>in</strong>to hid<strong>in</strong>g and entrusted her newborn baby to <strong>the</strong><br />

Nymphs. She <strong>the</strong>n returned to her husband-bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Kronos and tricked him <strong>in</strong>to eat<strong>in</strong>g a magical stone<br />

simulacrum <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> her child…<br />

This child was Zeus. Fostered by <strong>the</strong> Nymphs, he<br />

soon grew <strong>in</strong>to a young, mighty and clever immortal.<br />

His mo<strong>the</strong>r Rhea visited him <strong>in</strong> secret and toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong>y decided it was time to overthrow Kronos.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y tricked <strong>the</strong> Devourer <strong>in</strong>to dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

specially prepared magical brew, which made him<br />

so sick he regurgitated <strong>the</strong> five children he had<br />

already eaten. Be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a div<strong>in</strong>e nature, <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

survived <strong>in</strong>side Kronos’ gigantic belly. Those five<br />

gods were Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera and<br />

Hestia. As soon as <strong>the</strong>y were free, <strong>the</strong>y decided to<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir younger bro<strong>the</strong>r Zeus <strong>in</strong> his cosmic<br />

struggle aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r Kronos <strong>the</strong> Devourer…<br />

<strong>The</strong> War <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Titans<br />

Thus began <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Titans (also called <strong>the</strong><br />

Titanomachy). With <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Titans,<br />

Kronos set out to crush his rebellious children.<br />

At first, <strong>the</strong> War seemed to turn clearly to <strong>the</strong> Titans’<br />

advantage… but Zeus had a plan. He journeyed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> caves <strong>of</strong> Tartarus where Kronos had imprisoned<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cyclopes and o<strong>the</strong>r Chaos spawn and freed<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> exchange for <strong>the</strong>ir help <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> War.<br />

Assisted by his new allies and armed with <strong>the</strong> power<br />

<strong>of</strong> lightn<strong>in</strong>g, Zeus returned to battle and quickly<br />

vanquished <strong>the</strong> Titans. After his victory, Zeus exiled<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> defeated Titans <strong>in</strong> Tartarus or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

darkest recesses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cosmic void.<br />

Thus began <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Zeus, as well as <strong>the</strong> First<br />

Age <strong>of</strong> History, also known as <strong>the</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Myth…<br />
