Tritonis Ris<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r grow<strong>in</strong>g menace for <strong>the</strong> civilized nations <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Middle Sea is <strong>the</strong> eastern isle <strong>of</strong> Tritonis.<br />
Once <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> a mighty sea-empire, this<br />
k<strong>in</strong>gdom had, like Atlantis to <strong>the</strong> west, la<strong>in</strong> dormant<br />
for <strong>the</strong> past four or five centuries…<br />
But now <strong>the</strong> Sea Pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Acharnia have started to<br />
rebuild a mighty fleet and are apparently try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
resume diplomatic contacts with <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sun<br />
and, accord<strong>in</strong>g to some rumors, with <strong>the</strong> accursed<br />
Stygian Empire ot <strong>the</strong> far south.<br />
Could <strong>the</strong>se events be <strong>the</strong> prelude to a great war<br />
between <strong>the</strong> East and <strong>the</strong> West?<br />
<strong>The</strong> Centaur archers from Sicania use very long arrows<br />
Centaurs vs Amazons<br />
Some 20 years ago, ano<strong>the</strong>r very different war<br />
broke out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle Sea: a war<br />
between <strong>the</strong> proud queendom <strong>of</strong> Amazonia and <strong>the</strong><br />
impetuous Centaurs <strong>of</strong> Sicania, who apparently tried<br />
to push west <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amazons.<br />
<strong>The</strong> war is still go<strong>in</strong>g on, as more Centaur raiders<br />
from Sicania venture on <strong>the</strong> borders <strong>of</strong> Amazonia.<br />
<strong>The</strong> wise Centaur sage Chiron has recently sent<br />
several <strong>of</strong> his former pupils to <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three<br />
Cities, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> persuad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> noble rulers <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong>na to assist him <strong>in</strong> his peace-keep<strong>in</strong>g efforts.<br />
As if <strong>the</strong> situation wasn’t bad enough already, an<br />
alliance <strong>of</strong> seafar<strong>in</strong>g Barbarians from Hyperborea<br />
has started to attack Amazonia on its west, hop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to exploit <strong>the</strong> war aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Centaurs to <strong>in</strong>vade,<br />
plunder and sack <strong>the</strong> sacred queendom.<br />
Flanked on both sides by equally ferocious foes, <strong>the</strong><br />
Queen <strong>of</strong> Amazonia has f<strong>in</strong>ally decided to send her<br />
own emissaries to <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three Cities, <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> enlist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> valiant adventurers<br />
(preferrably female ones) aga<strong>in</strong>st her enemies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Sybaris Situation<br />
To <strong>the</strong> west, <strong>the</strong> fallen sea-empire <strong>of</strong> Atlantis seems<br />
to have awoken from centuries <strong>of</strong> decay and<br />
decadence and is apparently try<strong>in</strong>g to re-establish<br />
control over its former colony <strong>of</strong> Sybaris.<br />
As war is brew<strong>in</strong>g between <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Sybaris<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir former overlords, <strong>the</strong> rulers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Three Cities and Seriphos are still unsure about<br />
what <strong>the</strong>y should do: ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>tervene and help<br />
Sybaris to push back <strong>the</strong> Atlantean forces, runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> a full-fledged war with Atlantis (about<br />
which so little is known nowadays) or stand back<br />
and observe… runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> an Atlantean<br />
victory, with potentially disastrous consequences for<br />
all <strong>the</strong> nations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle Sea.<br />
2007 Edition Notes & Comments<br />
<strong>The</strong> World <strong>of</strong> Mythika<br />
Ah, <strong>the</strong> glory that was Mythika…<br />
Over <strong>the</strong> years, Mythika evolved from <strong>the</strong> very<br />
brief overview presented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al rules to<br />
‘a mythic tapestry <strong>of</strong> many colors’ (quote from<br />
an unknown gamer from <strong>the</strong> Letters page <strong>of</strong><br />
Griff<strong>in</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e).<br />
Every adventure module published by LGS<br />
added an extra bit <strong>of</strong> depth, substance or<br />
atmosphere (or just a few new maps) to <strong>the</strong><br />
‘<strong>of</strong>ficial’ M&M world… but <strong>the</strong> most important<br />
contribution came from Griff<strong>in</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
From 1975 to 1982, <strong>the</strong> monthly Mythika<br />
Gazetteer column detailed specific regions,<br />
k<strong>in</strong>gdoms, islands or cities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mythikal<br />
world. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se contributions came from<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual gamers, who eventually transformed<br />
Mythika <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> first pen & paper wiki RPG<br />
sett<strong>in</strong>g. Back <strong>the</strong>n, all-important concepts like<br />
metaplots or <strong>of</strong>ficial cont<strong>in</strong>uity were nonexistent.<br />
Those were <strong>the</strong> days… Ooops, looks like I’ve<br />
failed my sav<strong>in</strong>g roll aga<strong>in</strong>st Nostalgia… aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
