II: CREATURES<br />

Creatures <strong>in</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Terms<br />

Taxonomy<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are five broad categories <strong>of</strong> creatures: Folks<br />

(sentient and speak<strong>in</strong>g races), Beasts (natural<br />

animals), Monsters (fabulous beasts, mythic be<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

etc), Spirits (ghosts, o<strong>the</strong>rworldly entities etc) and<br />

Animates (artifically animated creatures).<br />

<strong>Game</strong> Characteristics<br />

<strong>The</strong> M&M rules use a simple system to def<strong>in</strong>e a<br />

creature’s capabilities <strong>in</strong> game terms.<br />

Creatures are rated <strong>in</strong> four general characteristics:<br />

Size, Ferocity, Cunn<strong>in</strong>g and Mystique.<br />

As detailed below, <strong>the</strong>se four basic characteristics<br />

are used to calculate <strong>the</strong> creature’s Melee attack<br />

mod, EDC, Hits and o<strong>the</strong>r scores.<br />

A creature’s Special Abilities may also <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

some <strong>of</strong> its scores, as detailed below.<br />

Size<br />

A creature’s Size category may be T<strong>in</strong>y, Small,<br />

Medium (man-sized), Large or Gigantic.<br />

As shown on Table 6A next page, a creature’s Size<br />

affects many <strong>of</strong> its key physical capabilities,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g its Hits Total, <strong>the</strong> damage it <strong>in</strong>flicts <strong>in</strong><br />

combat and its basic Movement rate.<br />

Ferocity<br />

This reflects <strong>the</strong> creature’s natural aggressiveness,<br />

physical power or tra<strong>in</strong>ed fight<strong>in</strong>g ability:<br />

Peaceful 0<br />

Aggressive +1<br />

Dangerous +2<br />

Deadly +3<br />

Cunn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This represents <strong>the</strong> creature’s <strong>in</strong>nate shrewdness<br />

and survival <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>cts:<br />

Average 0<br />

Alert +1<br />

Clever +2<br />

Crafty +3<br />

Mystique<br />

This reflects <strong>the</strong> creature’s presence, aura or <strong>in</strong>nate<br />

aff<strong>in</strong>ity with <strong>the</strong> forces <strong>of</strong> fate and magic:<br />

Normal 0<br />

Weird +1<br />

Eldritch +2<br />

Unearthly +3<br />
