Formerly divided and wary <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>se four<br />
states eventually managed to unite <strong>the</strong>ir military<br />
forces as <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ean Coalition, thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />
resolute political efforts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>nan nobility.<br />
<strong>The</strong> armies <strong>of</strong> Umbria were f<strong>in</strong>ally defeated by <strong>the</strong><br />
comb<strong>in</strong>ed might <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coalition dur<strong>in</strong>g a series <strong>of</strong><br />
epic land and sea battles.<br />
Two heroic Nobles gett<strong>in</strong>g ready for <strong>the</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Heroes<br />
<strong>The</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Heroes<br />
<strong>The</strong> Olympians ga<strong>the</strong>red and decided it was time to<br />
forge a new era: an age where mortals would be led<br />
and <strong>in</strong>spired by just rulers, wise priests, eloquent<br />
poets and valiant heroes, <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> endur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
despotic dom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> arrogant wizards.<br />
Those rare Sorcerers and Elementalists who had<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>ed faithful to <strong>the</strong> Gods were spared from <strong>the</strong><br />
div<strong>in</strong>e wrath <strong>of</strong> Zeus and were even allowed to pass<br />
on <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge as long as <strong>the</strong>y taught <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
disciples to pursue Wisdom <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> Power.<br />
Lastly, <strong>the</strong> Gods decided to extend a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
div<strong>in</strong>e favor to <strong>the</strong> four races who had refused to<br />
bow down before <strong>the</strong> Autarchs: Amazons,<br />
Hyperborean Barbarians, Nymphs and Centaurs.<br />
Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> forefa<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ean civilization,<br />
<strong>the</strong>se folks were allowed by <strong>the</strong> Gods to play a<br />
major part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> birth and consolidation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third<br />
Age <strong>of</strong> Mythika: <strong>the</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Heroes.<br />
Recent History<br />
<strong>The</strong> suggested sett<strong>in</strong>g for most <strong>Mazes</strong> & M<strong>in</strong>otaurs<br />
campaigns set <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> Mythika is <strong>the</strong> early<br />
years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth century <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Heroes,<br />
some 300-330 years after <strong>the</strong> Days <strong>of</strong> Wrath.<br />
<strong>The</strong> fourth century <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heroic</strong> Age is a time <strong>of</strong><br />
great wonders and high adventure, as well as a time<br />
<strong>of</strong> conflict. No less than three major wars have been<br />
fought dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last century, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m is still<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g on and a fourth one seems well on its way…<br />
In <strong>the</strong> wake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> victory aga<strong>in</strong>st Umbria, <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong>nan nobles tried to persuade <strong>the</strong> rulers <strong>of</strong><br />
Heraklia, Argos and Seriphos to consolidate <strong>the</strong><br />
military alliance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ean Coalition <strong>in</strong>to a<br />
permanent political federation <strong>of</strong> allied city-states…<br />
But <strong>the</strong> diplomatic efforts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>nan nobles were<br />
underm<strong>in</strong>ed by old commercial and cultural rivalries,<br />
which soon escalated <strong>in</strong>to a full-fledged war<br />
between Argos and Heraklia…<br />
<strong>The</strong> War <strong>of</strong> Two Cities<br />
This war (usually called <strong>the</strong> Argosean War <strong>in</strong><br />
Heraklia and <strong>the</strong> Heraklian War <strong>in</strong> Argos) was a<br />
bloody and exhaust<strong>in</strong>g conflict.<br />
It started almost 20 years after <strong>the</strong> victory over<br />
Umbria, dragged on for more than 20 years and<br />
brought <strong>the</strong> two warr<strong>in</strong>g citiy-states <strong>of</strong> Argos and<br />
Heraklia to <strong>the</strong> verge <strong>of</strong> economic collapse.<br />
It was eventually ended by <strong>the</strong> bold <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>nan armies.<br />
Once aga<strong>in</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g as unifiers and peace-keepers,<br />
<strong>The</strong>nan nobles managed to force <strong>the</strong>ir Argosean<br />
and Heraklian peers to agree on a peace treaty,<br />
which <strong>the</strong>y have viligantly enforced ever s<strong>in</strong>ce.<br />
For more than 60 years, <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>nan Peace has kept<br />
<strong>the</strong> Argosean-Heraklian rivalry strictly limited to <strong>the</strong><br />
cultural and economic fields, for <strong>the</strong> greater good <strong>of</strong><br />
everyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three Cities.<br />
But <strong>the</strong>se six decades <strong>of</strong> peace have also enabled<br />
Heraklia and Argos to rebuild <strong>the</strong>ir armies and some<br />
war-monger<strong>in</strong>g nobles from both sides seem to be<br />
chaf<strong>in</strong>g impatiently once aga<strong>in</strong>…<br />
It is also a time <strong>of</strong> uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty, where <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Three Cities and its civilization is threatened by new<br />
menaces and old enemies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Umbrian War<br />
<strong>The</strong> first war fought dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last century was <strong>the</strong><br />
Umbrian war, which occurred some 100 years ago<br />
and lasted 7 years.<br />
It resulted from an attempt by <strong>the</strong> warlike k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />
<strong>of</strong> Umbria to conquer <strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three Cities<br />
and <strong>the</strong> island <strong>of</strong> Seriphos.<br />
Three <strong>The</strong>nan adventurers have ga<strong>the</strong>red to discuss <strong>the</strong><br />
latest news. (“Oh no! Don’t tell me those war-monger<strong>in</strong>g<br />
morons from Argos and Heraklia are at it aga<strong>in</strong>!”)<br />
