Demeter<br />
This gentle goddess presides over agriculture,<br />
fertility and <strong>the</strong> earth. <strong>The</strong> cult <strong>of</strong> Demeter is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
accompanied by wild orgies. Her temples, called<br />
megara, are usually found <strong>in</strong> or near <strong>the</strong> woods. Her<br />
daughter Persephone spends six months <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year<br />
with Hades, symbolis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g seasons and<br />
<strong>the</strong> eternal cycle <strong>of</strong> life and death.<br />
Symbol: <strong>The</strong> sheaf <strong>of</strong> corn.<br />
Typical Worshippers: Farmers, country folk, earth<br />
elementalists, some nymphs.<br />
Hephaestus<br />
Ares<br />
A brash god <strong>of</strong> warfare, Ares is popular with<br />
adventurers. Ares is <strong>in</strong>voked also for revenge. He is<br />
not a subtle god <strong>of</strong> grand strategy but an up-front<br />
believer <strong>in</strong> raw combat.<br />
Symbol: Blaz<strong>in</strong>g torch and <strong>the</strong> spear.<br />
Typical Worshippers: Soldiers, commanders,<br />
warlike nobles, mercenaries.<br />
Artemis<br />
Artemis is <strong>the</strong> virg<strong>in</strong> sister <strong>of</strong> Apollo, and she is <strong>the</strong><br />
goddess <strong>of</strong> hunt<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>of</strong> wildlife. As a fertility<br />
goddess Artemis is <strong>in</strong>voked by mo<strong>the</strong>rs as well as<br />
more typically hunters. She also has a lunar aspect<br />
and is well known as a great and deadly archer.<br />
Symbol: A burn<strong>in</strong>g torch or a faithful hound.<br />
<strong>The</strong> god <strong>of</strong> fire, smiths and craftsmen <strong>in</strong> general,<br />
Hephaestus is a brawny, lame god. He is also<br />
associated with cyclopes and volcanoes. In myth he<br />
built many fantastic devices, some <strong>of</strong> which are<br />
hidden about <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> labyr<strong>in</strong>ths and on remote<br />
islands. Much to his misfortune, Hephaestus’ wife is<br />
<strong>the</strong> adulterous Aphrodite.<br />
Symbol: Hammer and tongs.<br />
Typical Worshippers: Smiths, armourers,<br />
bronzeworkers, fire elementalists.<br />
Hera<br />
<strong>The</strong> matronly wife <strong>of</strong> Zeus, Hera is associated with<br />
<strong>the</strong> sky and with <strong>the</strong> moon. Goddess <strong>of</strong> women and<br />
<strong>of</strong> childbirth and marriage, she is rarely <strong>in</strong>voked by<br />
adventurers. Hera punished many <strong>of</strong> Zeus' lovers,<br />
and could be said to have also embodied jealousy.<br />
Symbol: <strong>The</strong> peacock is her cult animal, her o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
symbol is <strong>the</strong> pomegranate.<br />
Typical Worshippers: House-keepers, stewards,<br />
seekers <strong>of</strong> vengeance, defenders.<br />
Typical Worshippers: Hunters, women, dryads.<br />
A<strong>the</strong>na<br />
<strong>The</strong> virg<strong>in</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Zeus, A<strong>the</strong>na burst, fully<br />
armed and armored, from her fa<strong>the</strong>r’s head. After<br />
her birth she dispensed advice to Zeus.<br />
