III: GAME MASTERING<br />

Enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g his players is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maze Master’s primary responsibilities – so beware <strong>of</strong> overlengthy lyrical <strong>in</strong>terludes<br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g Epic <strong>Adventure</strong>s<br />

<strong>Mazes</strong> & M<strong>in</strong>otaurs is a fantasy roleplay<strong>in</strong>g game<br />

that draws most <strong>of</strong> its <strong>in</strong>spiration from <strong>the</strong> heroic<br />

tales <strong>of</strong> Greek mythology as well as from modern<br />

adaptations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tales, such as <strong>the</strong> 1963 movie<br />

Jason and <strong>the</strong> Argonauts.<br />

A typical M&M adventure will <strong>in</strong>volve dar<strong>in</strong>g fights<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st horrible monsters, exploration <strong>of</strong> caves and<br />

labyr<strong>in</strong>ths deep underground and, <strong>of</strong> course, a<br />

couple <strong>of</strong> fiendish traps or puzzles.<br />

Basic M&M adventures can be grouped <strong>in</strong>to three<br />

broad types <strong>of</strong> scenarios, which are detailed below:<br />

Monster Hunts, Artefact Quests and <strong>Heroic</strong> Wars.<br />

Most M&M scenarios will also <strong>in</strong>volve quite a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

travel and adventurers will <strong>of</strong>ten explore or visit<br />

strange or unknown locations such as Mysterious<br />

Islands or even sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vast Underworld…<br />

Ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Heroes<br />

But before play beg<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> Maze Master and <strong>the</strong><br />

players should decide where, how and why <strong>the</strong><br />

heroes beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir adventures. Here are a few<br />

typical possibilities:<br />

Defend <strong>the</strong> City: You are <strong>the</strong> brave lords and<br />

warrior heroes <strong>of</strong> a famous city (choose one). <strong>The</strong><br />

people, <strong>the</strong> priests and <strong>the</strong> royal family look to you<br />

to defend <strong>the</strong> city from curses, gods, monsters,<br />

tyrants and o<strong>the</strong>r dangers.<br />

Follow A Leader: You are <strong>the</strong> loyal friends <strong>of</strong> a lord<br />

or k<strong>in</strong>g who has been exiled and now wanders<br />

across <strong>the</strong> world try<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d some way to rega<strong>in</strong><br />

his throne. As his closest allies, you carry out all<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> dangerous quests and heroic challenges to<br />

aid him <strong>in</strong> this daunt<strong>in</strong>g task.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gods Command It!: You have been chosen by<br />

a god (or Zeus, k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gods himself) to carry out<br />

a series <strong>of</strong> quests and challenges. You cannot<br />

refuse. Perhaps <strong>the</strong> heroes have angered <strong>the</strong> god <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> past or committed a crime. Sometimes <strong>the</strong> god<br />

selects an earthly k<strong>in</strong>g to hand out <strong>the</strong> god's<br />

requests and orders. Sometimes <strong>the</strong> god appears to<br />

<strong>the</strong> heroes <strong>in</strong>-person between adventures.<br />

Monster Hunts<br />

<strong>The</strong> Monster Hunt is a common story <strong>in</strong> Greek myth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> monster may be <strong>the</strong> Hydra, <strong>the</strong> Chimera, <strong>the</strong><br />

Gorgon or any o<strong>the</strong>r suitably perilous creature:<br />

whatever it is, it needs to be sla<strong>in</strong>. Sometimes <strong>the</strong><br />

monster is just a large and more dangerous version<br />

<strong>of</strong> a normal animal (like <strong>the</strong> Caledonian Boar) and<br />

<strong>the</strong> hunt really is a proper hunt ra<strong>the</strong>r than a<br />

perilous raid on some underground lair.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many reasons to kill a monster. Perhaps<br />

<strong>the</strong> hellish creature is terroriz<strong>in</strong>g a whole area or<br />

perhaps it is guard<strong>in</strong>g some valuable treasure. <strong>The</strong><br />

death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beast itself might actually be <strong>the</strong> prize:<br />

perhaps some part <strong>of</strong> its body is <strong>in</strong> itself <strong>the</strong><br />

treasure - th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hydra's poisonous blood, <strong>the</strong><br />

Nemean Lion's hide or <strong>the</strong> Gorgon's head.<br />
