Go beyond skepticism to innovate The idea of distributing condoms in front of bars on the weekends first had little support from partners on the project team, who were afraid that young men and bar owners would find it vulgar and irritating. But after the first weekends of distributing condoms, success was apparent: condoms were distributed massively. Bar owners even came to thank HI for this initiative and express their wish that it continue. Educate young people through other young people To reach young people in the bars on weekend evenings, condom distribution was done by people of the same generation. This group of volunteers, made up mostly of young girls, was trained on the topic of HIV/AIDS in order to provide information on the disease while ensuring distribution. Since they were both young and considered to be educated because they were university students, their message had a strong impact on other young people. Pay attention to appearances The young condom distributors wore very identifiable smocks with the project logo and a message promoting use of condoms. In addition, condoms were presented on a beautiful traditional tray to create a sort of “staging” for distribution. Finally, a project sticker was applied to each box of condoms, on the one hand to communicate about the project and on the other, to underline the fact that the condom was not offered for free by the manufacturer. 42
To learn more… In this document, a number of types of know-how used for community awareness have been presented. This know-how aims to provide inspiration for other awareness projects and is not exhaustive. For those who would like to investigate further, we propose other project references that give an overall view of the project, since only its community awareness aspect has been discussed here. These references will allow comparing what can be done in other contexts and will provide methodology and ideas for implementation of learning-from-experience process.
