between waves, pummelling my body or allowing me to float out<br />

past the breakers stilled by the sheer immensity below, around and<br />

beyond. The ocean seemed to possess an awesome power, being<br />

capable of empathizing with anything that I could feel, offering a<br />

supine watery cushion between myself and the demands of living<br />

back on the shore-bound world. Having entered the sea, hours could<br />

go by before I returned from this watery other-world. I was never a<br />

surfer but as long as I can remember I was a swimmer. Sometimes in<br />

the dry or hot seasons in Thailand my body would lament and<br />

grieve, aching for the temporary respite that can be had within the<br />

Pacific. During my trip to Australia I had several opportunities to go<br />

and visit the ocean. One time in particular was especially sublime.<br />

It was the weekend and I was walking along the beach with my<br />

father. The terrible feelings from in the car the other day, seemed to<br />

have evaporated. What appeared to be a disaster had surprisingly<br />

triggered a warm opening in my father’s heart. Perhaps it was<br />

wisdom coming from age or perhaps it was my long absence and<br />

impending departure that stimulated a kind of urgency in him. His
