The absence of quantified figures in <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong> <strong>Guinea</strong>, the most affected women are those placed in<br />

the most scarced geographic accessibility and found in unaccessible locations in the continental and<br />

island regions. These localities are generaly in lack of qualified personnel, drugs and minimal medical<br />

equipment, as well as appropriate infrastructures <strong>to</strong> offer quality services <strong>to</strong> the population.<br />

This situation is linked <strong>to</strong> the defficiency of vehicles <strong>to</strong> ensure the transportation of obstetric<br />

emmergencies <strong>to</strong> referral health centers.<br />

In order <strong>to</strong> face this situation <strong>to</strong> dispose of the necessary available data on obstetric fistula, the Ministry<br />

of Health and Social Welfare, with the UNFPA and the European Union assistance has brought the<br />

attention of the Government <strong>to</strong> carry out a national survey <strong>to</strong> determine the level of incidence of fistula<br />

at national level through systematic visit <strong>to</strong> all village councils neihgborhood communities at district<br />

level around the country in order <strong>to</strong> take the appropriate measures with the implantation of a reparation<br />

and social reinsertion of fistuled women in <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong> <strong>Guinea</strong>.<br />

II .<br />

NATIONAL CONTEXT<br />

Situated in the south area of the Gulf of <strong>Guinea</strong>, at the west site of central african area, <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong><br />

<strong>Guinea</strong> has a surface of 28.051,46 Square meters consisting of two clearly natural regions (the<br />

continental and insular regions). The island region includes the main island of the national terri<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

called Bioko where is located the capital city, Malabo.<br />

Data from the 2001 General Census for Population and Habitat estimated 1.014.999 habitants the <strong>to</strong>tal<br />

population of <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong> <strong>Guinea</strong> distributed in<strong>to</strong> two natural regions: 265.470 in the island region and<br />

749.529 in the continental region. Women represents 52,51% of the population. The increase rate<br />

between the two census (1994 and 2001) represent 7,6%. The birth rate represents 43.2 times 1000<br />

while the fertility rate represents 5.6 children times a woman at fertility age. The 0 – 14 years population<br />

represents a 47,30%. The mortality brute rate is around 13,7 times 1000, the mortality infants rate<br />

amounted <strong>to</strong> 93 times 1000, the infan<strong>to</strong>-juvenyl mortality rate is 50 times 1000, the maternal mortality<br />

rate is 352 times 100.000 birth alive while the life expectancy is 59,3 years.<br />

Concerning the administrative organisation, <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong> <strong>Guinea</strong> is divided in<strong>to</strong> seven provinces, three of<br />

them are in the island region. The other four, in the continental region; both regions <strong>to</strong>tal 18 districts<br />

and 741 village councils found in the base terri<strong>to</strong>rial administration of the country and where are<br />

concentrated the beneficiaires of the population.<br />

Economicaly, the oil production since 1995, makes that the economy of the country be florecient,<br />

inspite of the exceptional evolution of its growth economical indexes the development of <strong>Equa<strong>to</strong>rial</strong><br />

<strong>Guinea</strong> is facing a poverty situation of most of the population.<br />
