From optical electronics and lightweight construction to<br />

the mobile communication systems of tomorrow, the <strong>future</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g built throughout Saxony. We present a small selection –<br />

from Vogtland to the Upper Lusatia.<br />

Silicon Saxony, Bio<strong>saxony</strong>, Autoland Saxony: <strong>The</strong> Free State of Saxony <strong>is</strong> famous around<br />

the world for its <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> key forward-look<strong>in</strong>g sectors. But th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> by no means the<br />

whole story. Saxons are work<strong>in</strong>g to improve resource efficiency and conduct<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong><br />

the life sciences. <strong>The</strong>y also hold the world record for semi-transparent organic solar cells, a<br />

technology that will pave the way <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>future</strong> for “energy-produc<strong>in</strong>g” glass facades and<br />

panoramic car sunroofs. And did you know that Saxony hosts the two largest centres <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

for tackl<strong>in</strong>g the challenges of lightweight construction? Or that Prof. Gerhard Fettwe<strong>is</strong>,<br />

the world’s foremost “th<strong>in</strong>ker and doer” for the mobile communication systems of the <strong>future</strong>,<br />

teaches and conducts research at Dresden University of Applied Science? Every day across<br />

Saxony, researchers are address<strong>in</strong>g not only the big <strong>is</strong>sues of tomorrow, but also f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

solutions for the little th<strong>in</strong>gs that make our lives a bit easier and better. A small and probably<br />

non-representative selection of these activities <strong>is</strong> presented on these two pages.<br />

On a roll(er)<br />

Bad Düben-based Profiroll Technologies<br />

GmbH offers a complete range of<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es, dies and form<strong>in</strong>g equipment.<br />

Profiroll technologies are designed to<br />

use far fewer materials and consume far<br />

less energy than other processes. That’s<br />

the v<strong>is</strong>ion of the <strong>future</strong> <strong>in</strong> modern<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial production.<br />

Bad Düben<br />

Efficiency to the power of three<br />

Researchers at the “E³ Research Factory,” part of the Fraunhofer<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitute for Mach<strong>in</strong>e Tools and Form<strong>in</strong>g Technology<br />

(IWU), are develop<strong>in</strong>g the production equipment of the<br />

<strong>future</strong>. In addition to methods for cutt<strong>in</strong>g the consumption<br />

of energy and resources, they are work<strong>in</strong>g on concepts for<br />

carbon-neutral factories and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the role of people <strong>in</strong><br />

the production process.<br />

Together <strong>in</strong>dividually<br />

Radebeul Pharmaceutical Park offers all the <strong>in</strong>frastructure a<br />

pharmaceutical company needs – from research facilities to<br />

secretarial services. One particularly modern feature <strong>is</strong> the<br />

state-of-the-art labs that can be equipped <strong>in</strong>dividually. For efficient<br />

work and research, they also offer the option of shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

zones, such as clean<strong>in</strong>g rooms and ultrapure water systems,<br />

with other <strong>in</strong>stitutes.<br />

Laser power<br />

Mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g has long<br />

been an important sector <strong>in</strong> Saxony.<br />

TRUMPF Sachsen GmbH, located<br />

<strong>in</strong> Neukirch <strong>in</strong> Upper Lusatia, produces<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e tools for laser process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and automation components<br />

for laser cutt<strong>in</strong>g and punch laser<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es. <strong>The</strong> factory employs more<br />

than 400 people and <strong>is</strong> an important<br />

part of the <strong>in</strong>ternational high-tech<br />

company TRUMPF.<br />

Innovative medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>The</strong> Translational Centre for Regenerative Medic<strong>in</strong>e (TRM) <strong>in</strong><br />

Leipzig develops novel diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for<br />

regenerative medic<strong>in</strong>e and transfers these <strong>in</strong>to practical medical<br />

applications. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terd<strong>is</strong>cipl<strong>in</strong>ary range of its research covers<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g from new options for treat<strong>in</strong>g neurological d<strong>is</strong>eases<br />

to manufactur<strong>in</strong>g regenerative implants for the musculoskeletal<br />

system and replac<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>is</strong>eased organs and t<strong>is</strong>sues.<br />

<strong>The</strong> German purity law<br />

Pharmaceutical substances are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly concentrated. Health and safety<br />

regulations are becom<strong>in</strong>g more str<strong>in</strong>gent<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to prevent contact with sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Görlitz-based SKAN Deutschland GmbH<br />

special<strong>is</strong>es <strong>in</strong> clean-room technology, <strong>is</strong>olator<br />

technology and contam<strong>in</strong>ation control as<br />

well as develops appropriate solutions for<br />

production.<br />

Beam technology<br />

Pro-beam systems GmbH <strong>in</strong> Neukirchen develops and produces<br />

electron and laser-beam systems for applications <strong>in</strong> the<br />

automotive and aerospace <strong>in</strong>dustries as well as <strong>in</strong> electrical and<br />

medical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Unlike standard weld<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es, these<br />

systems enable almost d<strong>is</strong>tortion-free weld<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a vacuum<br />

without the need for additional materials.<br />

Energy-sav<strong>in</strong>g production<br />

Zwickau has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> automotive<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g for more than a century. And<br />

there’s no end <strong>in</strong> sight for the city’s power<br />

to <strong>in</strong>novative. Volkswagen, for example, <strong>is</strong><br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g new, energy-sav<strong>in</strong>g production<br />

methods <strong>in</strong> Zwickau. Intelligent transformer<br />

shut-off alone saves up to 72 megawatt hours<br />

of electricity every year.<br />

Shade without shadows<br />

EControl-Glas <strong>in</strong> Plauen offers a range of technical<br />

<strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a 170-square-metre conference<br />

hall under a barrel roof <strong>made</strong> of dimmable glass<br />

that doesn’t cast a shadow. Th<strong>is</strong> enables the SHGC<br />

and light transm<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>in</strong> the hall to be adapted <strong>in</strong>dividually<br />

at the touch of a button depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

the <strong>in</strong>tensity of sunsh<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Safe driv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>The</strong> control systems of today’s cars<br />

are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly complex. Fahrzeugelektrik<br />

develops and manufactures <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

plastic parts, components<br />

and modules with contact systems<br />

like switches, connectors and cable<br />

routers for traditional as well as<br />

electric and hybrid vehicles.<br />

Gas efficiency<br />

Freiberg-based DBI – Gastechnolog<strong>is</strong>ches Institut<br />

gGmbH – conducts research <strong>in</strong>to new technologies for the<br />

use of renewable gaseous energy sources. Amongst other<br />

areas, it develops solutions for the feed-<strong>in</strong> and util<strong>is</strong>ation<br />

of synthetic natural gas, hydrogen and biogas.<br />

Full speed ahead<br />

<strong>The</strong> Centre for Advanc<strong>in</strong>g Electronics<br />

Dresden (cfAED) br<strong>in</strong>gs together the<br />

research expert<strong>is</strong>e of 57 scient<strong>is</strong>ts<br />

from the Dresden and Chemnitz Universities<br />

of Applied Science and n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

non-university research establ<strong>is</strong>hments<br />

to take a globally unique, hol<strong>is</strong>tic<br />

and <strong>in</strong>terd<strong>is</strong>cipl<strong>in</strong>ary approach to<br />

research <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative technologies<br />

for the electronic data process<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the <strong>future</strong>. New materials – e.g. silicon<br />

nanowires, carbon nanotubes and<br />

organic materials – are be<strong>in</strong>g used to<br />

develop new components for build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative <strong>in</strong>formation process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

systems.<br />
