10 February 7–11, 2011 ADVENTURE AND LEARN – Maui, Hawaii DE9315 Endodontics: Get better! Now! The UBC/Hawaii course of endodontics will focus on the most relevant topics in clinical endodontics. The approach taken by both lecturers, Dr. Jeff Coil and Dr. Markus Haapasalo is first and foremost a practical one. As the best clinical results can be obtained when we also have a solid understanding of the issues leading to or complicating the treatment of endodontic diseases, theory and background information will also be addressed, facilitated by clinical examples. Course topics: 1. Current trends in clinical endodontics 2. Treatment planning: Diagnosis and treatment options 3. Review of tooth morphology and anatomic variations 4. Instrumentation: on the cutting edge 5. Effective and safe irrigation: need to know and good to know 6. Evaluating endodontic success versus failure; deciding upon endodontic retreatment versus endodontic surgery: risks and benefits 7. How to secure optimal long term endodontic results and treatment outcomes 8. Update on resorptions 9. Longitudinal tooth fractures: Most dentists don’t know this… 12 hours of instruction Markus Haapasalo DDS, PhD, Fellow of RCDC (endodontics) received his dental degree from the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Helsinki, Finland in 1978. From 1995 to 2004 he was a Professor of Endodontics in Oslo, Norway and from 2004 professor and chair of the Division of Endodontics at UBC, Vancouver, Canada. He is also the head of the Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences. Dr. Haapasalo has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific articles. He is the editor-in-chief of “Endodontic Topics”, an associate editor of “Journal of Endodontics”, Editorial Board member of “International Endodontic Journal”, and editor of “Visual Endodontics 2010” multimedia. In clinical endodontics his areas of special interest include instrumentation, irrigation, persistent infections, and resorptions. Dr. Haapasalo has received several teaching awards including the Louis I. Grossman International Award by the French Endodontic Society in 2007. He is actively lecturing about endodontics worldwide. Jeffrey M. Coil, DMD, MSD, Ph.D, FRCD(C), FADI, FACD received his undergraduate, dental and doctorate degrees from the University of British Columbia. He practiced general dentistry for 8 years and was a Clinical Instructor in Endodontics and Periodontics, before obtaining his certificate in Endodontics at the University of Washington in 1993. Dr. Coil is a Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics. He serves as an editorial consultant for the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association and on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Journal of Endodontics. He is a past President of the Canadian Academy of Endodontics, and is a member of the British Columbia Society of Endodontists and the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Coil is the mentor of the Northwest Endodontic Study Club and Seminar, and is currently the Director of the Graduate Endodontics Program, Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences, University of British Columbia. 11 Clinical Diagnosis of Oral Lesions Traditionally oral pathology has been taught in dental schools by presenting either clinical or histologic images and asking the student to recall their names. In clinical practice alterations in the oral soft and hard tissues rarely resemble the images from either dental school classes or oral pathology textbooks. The objective of this presentation is to guide the participants to develop an approach for the differential diagnosis of lesions of the soft tissues of the oral cavity through evaluation of key features of the lesions and reference to the anatomy/histology of the intraoral site. This approach builds on strengths resulting from the clinical care of patients to provide a more comprehensive strategy to develop a differential diagnosis. 3 hours of instruction Charles F. Shuler, D.M.D., Ph.D. is the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia. Prior to UBC he was a faculty member at the University of Southern California for 18 years. At USC he served as the Director of the University of Southern California Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology holding an endowed chair position as the George and Mary Lou Boone Professor of Craniofacial Molecular Biology. He also served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Craniofacial Biology and the Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs at the USC School of Dentistry. Dr. Shuler received his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, his D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, his Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Chicago and his Oral Pathology specialty education at the University of Minnesota and the Royal Dental College Copenhagen Denmark. His current research interests include craniofacial development, oral carcinogenesis and gene therapy. Cancellations made between 30 and 60 days prior to the first day of the program will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be granted for cancellations made less than thirty days prior to the first day of the program.
