Making Fun <strong>of</strong> Oral Surgery<br />
Dr. Ian Matthew<br />
Oral surgery can be a practice builder. It can also be a satisfying component<br />
to the varied skill set <strong>of</strong> general dental practice. The aim <strong>of</strong> this presentation<br />
is to provide an update on various aspects <strong>of</strong> oral surgery with the objective<br />
<strong>of</strong> making the surgery safer, less stressful and more enjoyable for clinician and<br />
patient alike.<br />
Topics to be addressed in this three-hour presentation<br />
include:<br />
• Instrumentation<br />
• Application Of Radiography For Safer Surgical Procedures<br />
• Local Anaesthesia – Technique And Pharmacology<br />
• Newer Concepts Of Surgical Exodontia<br />
• Third Molar Surgery Hints And Tips<br />
• Common oral lesions and their management<br />
Ian Matthew, PhD, MDent, Sc, BDS, FDSRCS(Eng), FDSRCS(Ed) is a<br />
full-time member <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>UBC</strong>’s Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He was trained<br />
as an oral surgeon in the United Kingdom, and is licensed as a specialist in<br />
oral surgery within the European Union. He has over 25 years <strong>of</strong> experience in<br />
teaching oral surgery at the undergraduate and graduate level. He has been<br />
the recipient <strong>of</strong> several teaching awards during his time at <strong>UBC</strong>. Dr. Matthew<br />
also maintains a part-time clinical practice in Burnaby.<br />

Aesthetics & Function <strong>of</strong> Ceramic Restorations<br />
Dr. Chris Wyatt<br />
Aesthetics & Function are interrelated in the delivery <strong>of</strong> successful veneers,<br />
crowns, and bridges. This one-day course will cover aesthetics concepts, dental<br />
materials, occlusion, and longevity <strong>of</strong> ceramic restorations. An emphasis will be<br />
placed upon the clinical use <strong>of</strong> the new aesthetic restorative materials including<br />
zirconium dioxide and lithium disilicate glass ceramics.<br />

Chris Wyatt, BSc, DMD, MSc, FRCD(C), Dip Pros is a Certified Specialist<br />
in Prosthodontics and an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Head <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong><br />
Prosthodontics and Dental Geriatrics at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>British</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong>,<br />
Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He is the 2009 recipient <strong>of</strong> the W.W. Wood Award for<br />
“Excellence in Dental Education.” In 1998 Dr.Wyatt was the recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Killam Teaching Award. In addition to lecturing and providing continuing<br />
education courses on Prosthodontics within and outside <strong>of</strong> Canada, he enjoys<br />
treating patients with prosthodontic concerns in his private practice. Dr. Wyatt<br />
is past President <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontists <strong>of</strong> Canada and the BC<br />
