Local Anaesthesia – The Backbone of Pain Control in
Dentistry

Course Description: Local anaesthesia forms the backbone of pain
control techniques in dentistry. Local anaesthetic drugs are the safest and the
most effective drugs in medicine for the prevention and management of pain.
In this program Dr. Malamed will discuss some of the exciting innovations
that are occurring in the area of pain control in dentistry with an emphasis
on local anaesthesia.
After an overview of the subject of dental pain control Dr. Malamed will discuss
(1) the local anaesthesia ‘ON’ switch -- buffered local anaesthetics, providing
profound pain control within 2 minutes of injection; (2) the LA ‘OFF’ switch
phentolamine mesylate, enabling sensation to be restored significantly faster;
(3) IN (intranasal) local anaesthesia – permitting treatment on maxillary teeth
without injection; (4) C- CLAD (computer--controlled LA delivery– making all
injections more comfortable; (5) a review of articaine HCl – new research
on its effectiveness in mandibular infiltration, (6) the dilemma of the ‘hot’
mandibular molar – how to effectively anaesthetize these difficult teeth; (7)
LA in the paediatric population – how to make LA safer in younger patients,
and (8) the question of paresthesia as related to the administration of LA.
Stanley F. Malamed, D.D.S was born and raised in the Bronx, New York,
graduating from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1969. He then
completed a dental internship and residency in anaesthesiology at Montefiore
Hospital and Medical Center in the Bronx, New York before serving for 2 years
in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. In 1973, Doctor Malamed
joined the faculty of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of U.S.C., in Los
Angeles, where today he is Professor of Anaesthesia & Medicine. Dr. Malamed
is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anaesthesiology, as well
as a recipient of the Heidebrink Award [1996] from the American Dental
Society of Anaesthesiology and the Horace Wells Award from the International
Federation of Dental Anaesthesia Societies, 1997 (IFDAS).
