Orthodontic Treatment Planning: Optimizing the Smile and
Facial Aesthetics
Dr. Linda Taylor and Dr. Sara Shamloo
Lecture Synopsis: The goal of the orthodontist is to achieve a functional
occlusion but also to make our patients more attractive. We will analyze
the smile and the face discussing the arrangements and proportions that
are considered most aesthetic. Orthodontic cases will be shown illustrating
treatment planning principles that can optimize dental and facial aesthetics for
your patients. Ideal occlusions and excellent aesthetics can best be achieved
in patients with ideal jaw relationships and perfectly proportioned teeth….but
for everyone else there must be some compromises. We must be careful not to
make choices that compromise aesthetics.
Linda Taylor, DDS and Dr. Shamloo, DDS, are partners in an orthodontic practice
in Coquitlam. Dr. Taylor graduated from UBC dentistry in 1982 and completed
her orthodontic training in Toronto in 1989. Her special interest is facial
aesthetics and the evolutionary reasons behind our aesthetic preferences.
Dr. Shamloo graduated from dentistry in 1997 from McGill and completed her
orthodontic training in 2005 at Western Ontario. Her Master’s thesis involved a
study of lip aesthetics as influenced by an extraction or non-extraction treatment
approach. Both Dr. Taylor and Dr. Shamloo share an almost obsessive interest
in analyzing the facial aesthetics of their patients and tabloid celebrities which
they feel complements their orthodontic practice.
