<strong>Australian</strong> High Commissioner to Malaysia, His<br />

By early 1987 the plaque, measuring 30 inches<br />
by 14 inches and weighing 34 lbs, was ready to<br />
be mounted on Bukit Batu Lawi.<br />
Exercise Bakti Batu Lawi<br />
The <strong>Australian</strong> Army Project Team, Malaysia,<br />
led by LTCOL John Murray, readily accepted<br />
the challenge of climbing Bukit Batu<br />
Lawi to find Tom Harrison's original wooden<br />
plaque and to affix the brass replica to the rock<br />
face of the mountain. The exercise was given<br />
the name Bakti Batu Lawi — The Spirit of Batu<br />
Ripat Bala and Captain Mark Luscombe.<br />
Lawi. The general outline of the exercise was<br />
as follows:<br />
Day 1<br />
Deploy from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah to<br />
Bareo by RAAF Caribou and establish a base<br />
camp at Bareo.<br />
Days 2 and 3<br />
Climb Bukit Batu Lawi and receive a resupply<br />
by air drop into an LP/DP on the eastern<br />
slope of the mountain.<br />
Day 4<br />
Locate the old wooden plaque and affix the<br />
new plaque to the mountain.<br />
Days 4 and 5<br />
Return to Bareo.<br />
Day 6<br />
Return to Kota Kinabalu.<br />
On 2 August 1987 a RAAF Caribou, captained<br />
by FLTLT Peter Muffitt, deployed the<br />
team from Kota Kinabalu to Bareo. The team<br />
consisted of climbing and base camp parties<br />
drawn from AAPTM, Air Base Butterworth<br />
and the <strong>Australian</strong> High Commission, Kuala<br />
Lumpur, as follows:<br />

The team was accompanied on its deployment<br />
to Bareo by the <strong>Australian</strong> High Commissioner<br />
to Malaysia, His Excellency Mr Cavan Hogue<br />
and the Second Secretary at the mission, Mr<br />
Conel Playfair.<br />
At Bareo the party was met by the Penghulu,<br />
Ngimat Ayu, who hosted a welcoming lunch.<br />
In appreciation for the assistance the Penghulu<br />
had extended to the exercise's participants the<br />
High Commissioner presented the Penghulu<br />
with a gift of <strong>Australian</strong> books.<br />
At 0<strong>70</strong>0 hours on 23 August the climbing<br />
party departed Bareo led by Rapat Bala, a<br />
Kelabit guide with 15 years' Police Field <strong>Force</strong><br />
experience. In addition, three Kelabit porters
