THE LESSER KEy OF SOLOMON
the 10th day of March Being one [on] a wednesday in the year 1641 according
to the old account- &c and as for to know what is attributed to the
planetts, I doe referr you to the books of Astrology whereof large volumes
have been written. &c. 4
[Concerning the chiefspirits ojthe hours,

and their servants andseals.}
The first houre ofany Day is ruled by an [the] angel called Samuel [Samael],5
who hath under his command many Dukes and servants: wherofwhe shall
mention 8 of the cheefe Dukes which is sufficient for practice: who have
444 servants [apiece] to attend them. Theire Names are as Followeth:
Amenie1, Charpon,> Darosiel, Monasie1, Brumiel, Nestoriel, Chremas,
Meresyn. Now for to fitt or make a seal for any of these 8 Dukes or the
cheefe prince Samuel doe as followeth-first write the Character of ye lord
of the ascendent secondly the l> afterwards the Rest of the planets, and
after then the characters ofye signe that ascendeth on the 12 house in that
hour that is shewed in this sigill which is fitted for the 10th Day ofMarch
in the year 1641 being on a wednesday in the first house &c: 7

Europe in 1582, but not in England until 1752. Many documents of the time
carry both dates, or, as in this case, specified which calendar they were following.
4 The subsequent instructions are confused by the fact that they are scattered throughout
the text. S1 rearranges things a little here. It starts with "When the seal is made
according to the former [sic] Directions Lay it on the table of Practice upon that
part of the table that it Notes with the Character that the Lord of the Ascendant
is off then Lay your hand on the Said seal & say the Conjuration that is at the latter
end of this third part for it serveth for all only changing the Names according to the
Time you work." This is followed by the "Table of Practise" drawing, then "The
Perfumes is to be made of such Things as is attributed to the 7 Planets &C. / Note
Mars is lord of the Ascendant every first hour of the Day whilst the sun goes
through Aries & Scorpio so is Venus Lady of the Ascendant every first hour whilst
the Sun goes through Taurus & Libra so the like of the Rest. / The 24 hours of the
day & night / The first houre...." Note that the wording "the former Directions"
makes it clear that this is not the original order.
