KA Gardeners
As the Kindergarten year comes to an end our class will be enjoying farm fresh salad from
the vegetables that we have been nurturing all winter. Our lettuce is ready and we are
waiting for our tomatoes to ripen. We will also enjoy a visit to our local farm to see all the
animals and foods grown in Manitoba.
KBs on the Farm
MOO… BAA…CLUCK…OINK…what’s all that racket in KB? We have been learning all about
the farm. Here are some farm facts: Sheep give us wool. Pigs stay cool by rolling in the
mud. Farmers use scarecrows to keep the birds away from their garden. Cows give us milk
that we can use to make cheese, yogurt, butter and ice cream…yum! We had fun shaking a
jar of cream so that it turned into butter! We all got to taste the butter with some bread.
We celebrated our learning with a trip to Deer Meadow Farm. It was fun to meet a real-life
farmer and see all the baby animals!
Oh, the Memories! Thinking Back on a Great Year in Grade 1A
We have had a year filled with fun, learning, and successes in Room 1A! We spent some
time thinking back on many of the special and exciting things we did together. Some of our
favourite memories include:
Learning about and taking care of our class pets - our stick bugs and fish
Going on a bear hunt in our classroom
Sharing learning with our families at Glavin Gala and Parent Teacher Interviews
Having Miss Ilg in our classroom
When Operation Santa came to visit our school
Reading Elephant and Piggie books together and laughing so hard
Using silly voices when we practice spelling words
Show and Tell
Friday Thank-you Meetings
Doing art in groups with our friends
Writing stories on the computer with our grade four buddies
Working hard for Swamp Star cards
Making our class brain that shows how we are smart
Going to visit our Pencil Pals at John de Graff School
Learning about numbers in Math
We have truly had a great year together and made so many wonderful memories!
Grade 1B Gives Free Advice!
As the students in 1B are preparing to enter grade 2, we reviewed all of the learning that
we have done this year and realised that we have really become experts at being
“Grade 1ers”! We decided that we should share our advice with Kindergarteners so that
they could get ready for entering Grade 1 in the fall time.
Here is our advice for being a successful Glavin Gator in Grade 1:
Sylvanna says “Do your homework!” Kolten says “ Learn your tallies!”
Eston says ”Learn your subtracting!” Carson says “Lean about leprechauns!”
Chris says “Learn your 2D shapes!” Shaheim says “No hats in school!”
Shayna says “Learn your 3D shapes!” Chelsea says “Walk in the hall!”
Parneet says “Stay in the lines when you are colouring!”
Jasmin says “Learn to print your name with lowercase letters!”
Ryan says “Clean up your toys after Choice Time!”
Mykayla-Lynn says “Listen to other people and teachers!”
Dut says “Put your shoes up on Fridays so they can clean the mats!
Xander says “Be responsible for the equipment that you take out at recess!”
Chriztian says “Learn how to walk down the hall to the bathroom!”
Gabe says “Learn your human body parts!”
The Chefs in Grade 1/2
To celebrate our learning about Canada, we became chefs and prepared some French
Canadian food! Our first recipe was making poutine. The combination of French fries,
grated cheese and gravy sure tastes good! Our second recipe gave us the opportunity to
work with something sweet – sugar tarts! Bon Appétit!
Tarte Au Sucre Françoise - French Canadian Sugar Pie
Ingredients:
2 cups of packed brown sugar 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla
1 can of evaporated milk (Carnation) ¼ cup butter (cold and diced into small cubes)
Prepared Pastry Shells, Boxed Pastry Shells, Or Scratch
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix brown sugar and flour in a bowl.
In another bowl: mix together milk, eggs, and vanilla.
Gradually combine the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
Pour filling into the pie shells.
Put a cookie sheet under pie crust(s).
Drop cold butter cubes throughout the mixture.
Bake 45-50 mins. (outside edges are firm; centre is slightly soft or jelly-like).
Chill completely. ~Serve with whipped cream or ice cream~
Here’s what some of the students had to say about the sugar tarts:
Carter: “This tastes good!!” Alexis: “I like it. It is yummy!”
Eric: “I didn’t think I would like it, but I do!”
Creative Writing in 2A
All of the students in 2A have worked very hard in their creative writing this year! We have
written many short and long stories. As a class, we are currently writing the fifth chapter of
a book that we have been working on since Term II. It is a book called, The Day My Bucket
Spilled. This story is about a boy named Ash and a girl named Daisy who work together to
encourage a friend to make good choices. (It can be found in poetry binders at the end of
June). Independently, we each just finished writing funny and insightful books for our
friends who are currently finishing grade one titled, Grade Two Survival Guide. These
survival guides are full of tips and wisdom including: the importance of learning to tie
your shoes, learning cool dance moves, and just being yourself. Bravo to our 2A writers
who have truly written some heart-warming stories and witty comedy this year!
Grade 3 Learns about Plants & Soil
Oh what a busy time in grade three!!! The grade 3 students have been
learning a lot about plants and soils throughout this term. So far they
have sprouted bean plants, planted flower seeds, and have some pretty
silly looking grass heads growing! They have observed and compared
the appearance of several different types of plants. They have also
conducted experiments to determine the conditions needed for healthy plant growth…you
should see our bean plant that has not been getting any sunlight!!! The students are now
able to recognize that a plant uses the Sun’s energy to make its own food and they are
able to identify the basic parts of plants, as well as each part’s function. Students have
been using appropriate vocabulary related to their investigations of both plants and soil.
They have identified animals found in soil and are learning about their importance to the
soil. They have also learned about composting and have worked together to describe ways
to return organic matter to the soil. We had a visit from a gardener and she taught the
students a lot about what it was like to be a gardener. We will also be heading to a garden
centre for a visit during the month of June. By the time the end of the school year rolls
around… we may all have “green thumbs!”
WE LIKE TV, WE LIKE WRITING, YOU CAN DO BOTH!!
Play like Bobozilla today!!
The grade 3’s & 4’s of Class 3/4T are working on advertising!! They are inventing
products, creating slogans, writing scripts and designing logos as they practice and
film their very own commercials… “I’m luvin’ it
4A Poetry
During our final term in grade 4, we have been studying Habitats and Communities and Manitoba. We have
learned how all things in a habitat (including the bugs) are interdependent on one another for survival. We have
learned that in Manitoba we need to work to protect the homes of all animals and plants, as well as our human
habitat by doing things such as recycling and watching our use of water. WE all depend on one another!
Grade 4/5 and Grade 5
Mrs. Bakke and Mrs. Benn
This term, our focus in class has been on weather and on the
people that settled in Canada and Manitoba. We were fortunate
to celebrate both of these by attending Lower Fort Garry on a
beautiful Friday in May. The students were treated to tours by
settlers, metis, and aboriginal actors who showed them how
each of these groups lived and interacted at Fort Garry in the
1800’s during the fur trade. We learned that Treaty #1 was
signed here, the North West Mounted Police trained here, and
it was also the location for Manitoba’s first jail. After a picnic
lunch, the students played ‘Artifact Bingo’ and learned more
about the tools and items important to the people of the day. It
was a very genuine experience and the students had a great
day!

This will help us with planning and preparation for the 2013-2014 school year. Thank You.
Medication Pick Up
To promote a safe school environment, the school will destroy any medication left at the school over the
summer vacation. The school will take the medication to the nearest pharmacy that participates in the
hazardous waste disposal program. This action will ensure that outdated medication is not administered to
your children and eliminates the storage of medication at the school over the summer. To ensure that the
school does not dispose of wanted medication, please pickup your child’s medication prior to the summer
vacation. Please note that medication CANNOT be sent home with your child.
To ensure the school is using current information about your child’s medication, an Authorization for
Medication form must be completed each year. To assist parents, these forms are available for
pick-up to be completed for the 2013-2014 year. A convenient time to receive these forms
might be when you come to pick up your child’s unused medication in June.
Safety Over Convenience -Parking Restrictions to Observe
Recently we have had concerns expressed about people parking or stopping in illegal zones at and near the
school. Traffic control signs are posted in the following areas:
Ø School Parking Lot - Do Not Enter
Please DO NOT enter the parking lot or use the parking lot entrance to turn around on Antrim.
The parking lot is designated for staff and school buses only.
Ø South Side of Antrim Road (in front of the school)
School Bus Loading Zone - No Parking
Vehicles are not allowed to stop/park AT ALL in this zone.
No Parking/ Stopping from 7:30am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, September - June.
Ø South Side of Antrim Road (east side of parking lot driveway)
No Parking – Loading Zone
Indicating that you can only stop briefly to drop off/ pick up children ---DO NOT PARK!
Ø North Side of Antrim Road - No Parking 8:00am - 5:00pm, Mon.- Fri., Sept. - June
Dropping off your children on this side means they have to cross a busy street in the
middle of the block without the benefits of patrols. This is not a safe!
Please drop off/ pick up only on the south side of Antrim or at an intersection where
your child can cross with patrols.
Ø We ask all families for their support and cooperation in keeping our children safe.
*Please keep the above in mind for all future events at the school.
*The school has been advised by community that they will call tow trucks if people are incorrectly parked.
