a Sustainable Future
OneSteel Safety Plan
Throughout the year the CEO led a
review of the OneSteel approach to
safety, including the effectiveness
of the implementation of our
Codes of Practice, a review of our
approach to safety at small sites,
and the suitability of our existing
performance measures to drive the
reduction of significant incidents.
A comprehensive OneSteel
Occupational Health and Safety
(OHS) plan has been cascaded
into the OneSteel business units.
The plan recognises that injury
prevention programs alone will not
prevent significant incidents and
our approach reflects the need to
continue to build the capability and
systems in the organisation so that
the organisation continually improves
its ability to recognise, assess and
manage significant risk.
Safety Leadership
The Occupational Health Safety and
Environment (OHSE) Council oversees
the execution of the OHS plan and
drives continued improvement. The
Council, chaired by the Managing
Director and Chief Executive Officer,
includes the key business leaders
and provides focus, alignment, and
accountability across OneSteel for
key OHS activities.
Throughout the year OneSteel
continued to use the DuPont
organisation to assist in safety
improvement activities.
Safety Management Systems
The OHS Management System Audit
Program utilises the national self–
insurers auditing model to facilitate
an internal safety management
system audit process. This provides
the site with gap analysis and
recommendations for safety system
improvements and supports our
National self–insurance licensing.
A new common OneSteel
computer–based safety information
management system for such
elements as injury and incident
investigation and hazard registers has
been developed. The system has been
implemented within our Recycling
business. The system is designed to
improve consistency of reporting,
facilitate the sharing of information
as well as provide a tool to facilitate
the effective management of
corrective actions. Implementation
of the common system across the
remainder of the organisation will
commence in the second half of 2010.
Risk Management
Emphasis has been placed on building
capability in hazard identification, risk
assessment and risk management.
During the year, implementation
continued for each of the 14 OneSteel
Codes of Practice. The Codes of
Practice represent the minimum
standards for the management
of common significant risks
across OneSteel.
The OneSteel Assurance Program
reviews compliance with the Codes of
Practice through auditing, reporting,
and monitoring close–out of actions.
