15 Safety & People Safety & People 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Our Approach to Human Resources OneSteel recognises that superior business performance and continued organisational growth requires capable and engaged people, combined with the appropriate organisational design and processes to deliver business outcomes. OneSteel employs around 10,000 people, and our Human Resources and Organisational Effectiveness Plan articulates the key strategies and actions that OneSteel is employing towards business outcomes, as part of the overall OneSteel strategic plan. The key strategies of this plan include: • Supporting business improvement and growth initiatives • Driving succession, talent and development outcomes • Ensuring effective attraction, engagement and retention of employees Our Human Resources Performance The majority of OneSteel’s employees are full–time employees with around 90% based in Australia. The graphs below show OneSteel’s employees according to employment type (Australia only), employment contract (Australia only) and region. Employment Type & Contract OneSteel also engages other labour either under contracts for services (eg. maintenance contractors) or under contracts for labour through labour hire providers. These equate Employment Type to approximately 2,000 full-time equivalents (FTEs). In FY10 OneSteel’s employee initiated turnover rate reduced to approximately 8% for the year, the lowest annual rate since 2005. Region With the majority of non–staff employees covered by collective agreements, OneSteel continues to effectively manage employee relations to facilitate ongoing productivity improvement and to ensure constructive workplace relationships.
