6 OneSteel Sustainability Report 2010 Sustainability Drivers & Core Values ECONOMIC COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT PEOPLE MARKET CORE VALUES SAFETY CUSTOMERS OneSteel’s Sustainability Reporting Framework illustrated here as the content of a Grinding media ball. Safety is one of two core values in OneSteel. Our goal is to establish a workplace free from injuries, incidents and illness. OneSteel demonstrates a strong commitment to occupational health and safety, believing that all injuries, occupational illnesses and incidents are preventable. Customer is a core value at OneSteel. In meeting our promise to customers, we sell over 40,000 products to a wide range of end markets including residential and non-residential, engineering construction, mining, consumables, manufacturing, automotive and rural.
7 Sustainability Drivers & Core Values Sustainability Drivers & Core Values Onesteel employs over 10,000 people, services over 30,000 customers, produces 40,000 products and generates $6 billion in revenue MARKET PEOPLE ENVIRONMENT COMMUNITY ECONOMIC OneSteel produces and sells over 2 million tonnes of steel products in Australia and exports over 6 million tonnes of iron ore to overseas steel makers as well as having one of Australia’s largest metal recycling operations. OneSteel employs approximately 10,000 people across Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Asia, of which over 67% of employees were involved in safety observations during FY10. Environmental material inputs include iron ore, coal, steel scrap, limestone, oxygen and water. OneSteel’s outputs include scrap, carbon dioxide, water, slag, hot gases and waste products. 55% of steel produced is made from recycled material collected externally. OneSteel engages with the community at major sites through several consultation groups such as the Environment Consultation Group in Whyalla and Waratah Community Liaison Committee in Newcastle. Across OneSteel, businesses and sites invest in improving the local community and engage with communities, governments and other representative bodies. OneSteel‘s total revenue was $6.2 billion during FY10 with payments to providers of capital of $212 million.
