In its fifth year the Northern Ireland Junior
Section Musician of the Year competition once
again attracted a good entry with 36 boys
from throughout Northern Ireland taking part.
A range of nine different instruments was played
along with four boys who sang solos. They
entertained the very appreciative audience
throughout the afternoon. The boys selected
their own piece(s) of music and this provided
a varied and entertaining selection of music.
All boys performed extremely well and the
overall standard was very high. The adjudicator,
Mr Alan Beattie, had a very difficult job in
selecting the top three musicians. In his
remarks he provided very useful guidance
and advice along with encouraging comments.

The winner was presented with the Robert Renwick Cup, and 2nd/ 3rd places awarded small trophies. All boys received a
Certificate of Participation. Three Highly Commended Certificates were presented to Jonathan Dempster, 4th Lisburn (trumpet);
Michael Doyle, 4th Portadown (voice) and Andrew Moore, 3rd Ballyclare (piano). The Northern Ireland District President,
Professor Norman Nevin, presented the certificates and trophies.
Skills for Queen’s
Badge Course
The Skills for Queen’s Badge Course
held on 8th to 10th January at Rathmore
went ahead despite heating problems.
