How Often Should You Test?<br />

That depends upon the size and complexity of your plant. Even identical<br />

units can differ <strong>in</strong> the required check periods; experience is your best guide.<br />

In general, however, work<strong>in</strong>g apparatus – motors, generators etc. – are more<br />

likely to develop <strong>in</strong>sulation weaknesses, as compared to wir<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>sulators<br />

and the like. A test schedule for work<strong>in</strong>g equipment should be established,<br />

vary<strong>in</strong>g from every 6 to 12 months, depend<strong>in</strong>g on the size of equipment<br />

and severity of the surround<strong>in</strong>g atmospheric conditions. For wir<strong>in</strong>g and the<br />

like, tests once a year are generally sufficient, unless the plant conditions are<br />

unusually severe.<br />
