This interactive presentation provides insights
from a 2012 survey of 9-1-1 interpreters
representing 45 different languages. The
discussion highlights common language and
cultural issues that complicate 9-1-1 calls. The
discussion also offers strategies to overcome
issues, and provides tips to work more
effectively with 9-1-1 interpreters. Attendees will
better understand the cultural issues in action
during 9-1-1 calls and will be better prepared
to work through them to provide appropriate
assistance.

A recent trend in the popular management
literature has been to encourage employers
to focus on a job applicant’s attitude instead
of their skill or ability. However, the United
States Department of Labor indicates that to
help reduce employment selection errors and
increase the effectiveness of employment
decision making employers should use a
variety of tests and procedures to assess
candidates. Using research from public-safety
agencies focusing on dispatchers/calltakers,
this presentation emphasizes the importance
of testing for both skill and attitude during the
pre-employment process.
