causal steps will not permit clarification of the immune system. The method<br />
is not appropriate to the complex laws that pertain to life.<br />
Despite their complexity and incalculability, these biochemical processes<br />
always create a harmonious, unstable equilibrium that is far removed from<br />
the thermodynamic equilibrium and exactly for this reason highly adaptable.<br />
Health may thus be seen as a middle element between chaos and order,<br />
with disease a deviation from this middle position toward either extreme.<br />
W. Gerok has shown this rather well in the case of osteoporosis. 12 Blood<br />
levels of parathyroid hormone normally show irregular diurnal fluctuations.<br />
If osteoporosis develops the level remains rigidly the same, indicating a<br />
swing to excessive order. It is now also known that irregularity is the norm<br />
for the human heart beat and that excessive regularity as well as irregularity<br />
signal functional disorders that have to be taken seriously. There are many<br />
other examples, but space does not permit them to be discussed here.<br />
In fractal geometry, the balanced state in natural morphology is seen to<br />
lie on the boundary to chaos, which also means that chaos is essential to it.<br />
Healthy physiological processes may also be seen to be in balance between<br />
chaos and order, with the equilibrium constantly re-established on a narrow<br />
ridge between two unequal weights.<br />
Chaos theory offers equally startling new insights in other sciences; this<br />
will lead to changes in paradigm, and rightly so.<br />
The brief outline given above indicates that the level to which chaos<br />
theory is addressed is the level of the etheric. As already stated, the golden<br />
