Undergraduate Program: Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences: Students in the Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) program study the exciting areas of drug discovery, drug delivery, drug action, drug distribution and pharmacoeconomics. The 4-year undergraduate program builds a strong science foundation, develops essential laboratory skills, and provides the experience and training necessary for graduate education, graduate professional education, or a healthrelated career. Figure 4: Enrollment Growth in the BSPS Program This program remains very strong, with an 80% retention rate. 145 new freshmen brought our total BSPS student enrollment to 479 this academic year. Slightly more than half the class are female, 25% from minority-presence groups and 31% in the University Honors Program. By the end of Spring Quarter 2007 the mean GPA for this group was 3.18. Eighteen BSPS students are currently participating in undergraduate research projects. Many of our top students in this program entered our PharmD program in the fall, while others have gone on to medical school, graduate school, or one of many career options. We graduated 101 BSPS students in the 2006-2007 academic year, our largest class to date. Of this number 36 students graduated with Latin Honors. ‘Buckeyes all the way’, brothers Ian (21), Devin (20) and Trevor Miller (18) are here together at OSU from their hometown, Wheelersburg, Ohio. Devin and Ian, both in the BSPS Program in Pharmacy, and Trevor in a pre-med program, all live near the OSU Medical Center, close to their friends, their classes and close enough to each other to retain their family ties. The brothers are from a family of 7 children. Their father, a Chemical Engineer, and their mother, currently a student at OU, clearly value education and encouraged the brothers towards higher education and the health-care professions. The choice of OSU was an easy one, as it offered them an exceptional education, a fun, supportive environment and a chance to remain together. Trevor is on track to become a cardiologist, Ian a pharmacist and Devin choosing between a pharmacy career and owning his own business. Perhaps he’ll find a way to do both. Linsey McFadden, from Dayton, Ohio, will earn her Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in June 2008. She is interested in earning her PharmD degree and wants to pursue her professional interest in clinical pharmacy, specifically hospital pharmacy. Linsey credits her interest in research to Dr. Jim McAuley, Professor of Pharmacy Practice. It was during her work in his Epilepsy Clinic that she learned how to bridge the gap between research and patient care. During this time, Linsey was also given the opportunity to present her research at a national conference, an important experience for a young student. Because her cultural heritage is very important to her, Linsey keeps her Greek ties alive and thriving through her connections with the Greek Church and OSU student cultural organizations. Linsey is active in the Pre- Pharmacy Club and serves on the BSPS (Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences) Program Committee. 11
