International Outreach — College of Pharmacy Visit to Taiwan Outreach extends well beyond our national borders. Ken Hale, Assistant Dean for Professional and External Affairs, is establishing and maintaining liaisons with professional organizations and external constituencies. Included in his external affairs work is an increasing institutional emphasis in international affairs. A delegation from our College visited the National Taiwan University, National Yang-Ming University and China Medical University in October 2006 to foster collaborations in research, teaching and pharmacy practice development. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Ching-Shih Chen, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at OSU. Among the academic leaders from Taiwan involved in this visit was Dr. Shoei- Sheng Lee, a PhD alumnus of our College, who is the Dean of Pharmacy at National Taiwan University. While in Taiwan our faculty participated in scientific and practice symposia, met with faculty and students and toured research and practice facilities. Agreements were signed to explore future research, teaching and practice-related collaborations. In addition the delegation met with OSU Pharmacy alumni for a wonderful Taiwanese dinner. This visit to Taiwan will lead to outstanding educational and research opportunities for our faculty and students interested in international relationships. 51
Development The Willard A. Staker Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by Staker’s Drugs Inc. Income from this fund provides scholarships to students from Scioto County with an interest in community/retail pharmacy. Staker Drugs has three family owned pharmacies in Portsmouth, Ohio. The family owned business was started by Jim’s father (Willard Staker, 1923 OSU Pharmacy graduate) in the 1930’s. Jim serves on the College of Pharmacy’s Dean’s Corporate Council and Southern Ohio Medical Center Board of Directors. Staker spoke at the 3rd Annual Endowed Scholarship Reception impressing upon students the importance of higher education, the opportunities open to them with a degree from the College of Pharmacy, and his and Sally’s desire to honor his father by providing financial assistance for students to attend Ohio State. Jim credits his father’s example for the three generations of pharmacists in their family. Jim’s daughter, Jennifer, and nephew, Steve, are pharmacists. Three pending endowment funds reached fully endowed status in 2007. The Alpha Zeta Omega-Henry Agin Scholarship supports a student each year. The College of Pharmacy Faculty Research and Development funds faculty programs. The George and Betty Richards Endowed Fund is currently a dean's discretionary fund. Support for scholarships and faculty continue to be high priorities as they are important recruiting tools to ensure the quality of the College and our programs. Development events in 2006-2007 included two football brunches and a presidential brunch corporate table with pharmacy donors and the dean at the Michigan game. A small reception was held at the home of Alan and Sandy Katz during Winter College in Bonita Springs. The 3rd annual Scholarship Recipient Reception with the Office of Student Affairs saw an increase in student and donor attendance. This event celebrates our donors’ roles in supporting students in pursuit of careers in pharmaceutical sciences. Alumni, James Staker and Joel Altschule spoke on behalf of the donors. The 2nd annual Research Day highlighted the accomplishments of Drs. Larry Robertson and Raymond Doskotch. Two former students of Dr. Doskotch, Private Foundations 16% Corporate Foundations 4% Pamela Boner and Michael Pcolinski solicited alumni in support of the Doskotch Fellowship and raised an additional $34,250 in cash and pledges for graduate support with more verbal pledges in discussion. The 2nd annual Emeritus Faculty Appreciation lunch hosted an increased number of emeritus faculty from the first year Faculty Club to thank them for their service and keep them connected to the College. Shannon Weiher Director of Development Private Support by Donor 2007 Other Organizations 11% Alumni 31% Corporations 27% Non-Alumni 11% 52 In 1971 Daniel Waitzman (BS ’47), his sister Beatrice Grossman and Milton Goldberg, their cousin, established the Leo C. Waitzman Memorial Scholarship in memory of their older brother. Danny speaks from the heart when he recalls how their parents sacrificed dearly to send their three children to OSU. The siblings made their parents proud, having achieved much success in their chosen professions. Leo, the eldest brother, was plagued with illness throughout his life and passed away in 1970. He made an impression on his brother and sister who found a way to honor him and assist pharmacy students in realizing their dreams for a pharmacy degree. The Waitzman family’s legacy of helping others continues to grow every year with each new PharmD student awarded the Leo C. Waitzman scholarship.
