PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Dear Members
I would like to thank fellow members once again for their unwavering support
at the 95th Annual General Meeting, and take this opportunity to announce
that the Resolution to carry out Phase 3 of the Club’s redevelopment project
and the renovation of Man Zhu Café and Three Bars was passed. I am pleased
to welcome the office bearers for the term 2010/2011. The Management
Committee will continue to work together to further improve the Club and
maintain its standing as a premier Club.
On 11 June, there were articles published in The Straits Times and Lianhe
Wanbao relating to the expulsion of a Club member. In response to this matter,
the Management Committee has issued a detailed clarification, which has
been inserted in this newsletter for members’ reference. The insert contains
events that took place prior to the publication of the articles and points that
will help clear any doubts that members may have. Hence, I hope members
would spare some time to read the insertion.
On a lighter note, I am pleased to announce the launch of the debut issue of
eFreestyle on the Club’s website in July this year. In line with the Club’s “Go Green” theme for the year, eFreestyle
is an online newsletter, an initiative to help conserve the environment, and to reduce the Club’s operating
expenses. With this in mind, members can choose to receive only one copy of the magazine per household, or
opt out from receiving the hard copy altogether. To do this, simply fill in the form that comes together with this
issue and return it to the Club.
Meanwhile, we are working towards an electronic means of communication which means that in the near future,
members will be able to receive Club news and activity updates via email. To enable us to do this, we urge members
to update their details using the “Membership Register Updating Form” obtainable from the Club’s website.
With health issues on the rise, the Sports & Lifestyle department has lined up not only physical activities, but
also educational talks on health matters. The “Preventing and Beating Osteoporosis” workshop is organised
especially for ladies, alongside the Enzyme Nutrition Health Talk and Chiropractic & Ergonomics and Chiropractic
for Children Talk.
For the energetic and restless, there is an all-new Mixed Dance Class that comprises of Belly Dancing, Bollywood,
Hip Hop and Salsa all in one class. For those who are relatively new to meat cuts, take note of the two interesting
workshops where Chef Roy returns to educate members on the choice of beef and pork cuts. The long-awaited
Creative Painting class is also back to hone the creativity of kids and youths. Parents can also enrol their kids in the
“Hands-on Finance Education” workshop to start them early on the topic of financial planning.
Coming 9 August will mark Singapore’s 45th National day, the Management Committee and Club’s administration
congratulate all Singaporeans on the country’s 45 years of nation building!
Shalom and God Bless,
Edwin Lee
CSC SPORTS AWARDS
Chinese Swimming Club, Auditorium Saturday, 17 April 2010 Reported by : Lam Jick Sern
Convenors receiving their tokens of appreciation
The Annual CSC Sports Awards
was held on 17 April at the Club Auditorium to pay tribute
to dedicated athletes who had brought glory to our Club
and country. A total of 180 individuals attended the dinner,
including the Management Committee members, Sports
Sub-Committee members, sponsors, awardees and their
family members.
Miss Malaysia Universe 2004 and TV host, Andrea Fonseka
was the emcee for the evening, while Dr Tan Eng Liang graced
the event as the Guest-of-Honour. The first performance
was a synchronised hip-hop break-dance by Suntec Dance
Competition 2003 champion, FUYO. Club Captain Mr Nicholas
Lim then delivered the opening speech.
In his speech, Mr Lim commended the passionate Sub-
Committees and the Club’s administrative staff for
staging additional fund raising events for the Club’s
centennial celebrations on top of the ongoing activities.
He also gave special mention to Convenors who had
volunteered more than four years of their services to
bring their sports to greater heights.
Popping confetti cannons
During the first award presentation, Club Captain gave
plaques of appreciation to all the Convenors as well as
tokens of appreciation to the Sponsors, Arina Hogan
Builders, Brother International, C & T Sports Trading, Li-
Ning Sports Singapore, Malaysia Dairy Industries and
Pilot Pen. The following performance by international
artist Dan Thompson brought the house down. The
Australian’s hilarious singing impersonation such as
Michael Jackson and Teresa Teng induced sidesplitting
laughter from the floor.
At the second award presentation, Club President Mr
Edwin Lee was on hand to present the Meritorious and
Recognition Awards to the 19 winners. A touching photo
montage of the Club’s athletes in action produced by the
Sports & Lifestyle Department was debuted before Dr Tan
went up the stage to present the five main awards. All the
winners were then invited to pop confetti canons to end
the night on a high note!
Following up from her first Sportsgirl of the Year award
in 2009, this year’s Sportswoman of the Year Ting
to swimming. Having scaled back her training due to
academic commitments, Ting Ting still managed to
defy the odds and win a Bronze medal at the FINA/
Arena Swimming World Cup. She also took the 200
IM Gold in the 5th Singapore National Swimming
Championships and qualified for the 13th FINA World
Group Swimming Championships, a Bronze medal at
part in many tournaments worldwide. Xue Jie was
Tennis Championships. For his achievements, Xue Jie
41st Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships 2010 Ng Woon Yang
The most important national level age group meet on the local swimming calendar was participated by over 100 swimmers
from CSC, all eager to find out where they stood against Singapore’s best and also aiming to lower their personal bests. Our
swimmers performed commendably to help CSC finished second overall in both the Junior and Senior categories. Two of our
boys also distinguished themselves. Lionel Khoo broke three national under-17 records (50, 100 and 200m Breaststroke) and
was on the way to being named the Most Valuable Player for his age group (13 to 14 years). Arren Quek re-wrote the national
under-17 record for the 50m Freestyle.
Vying for a chance to represent Singapore at the inaugural
Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Clara Wong had to win the
triathlon YOG time trial held at the 2010 Singapore International
Triathlon. Clara, currently an A1 swimmer with CSC, spent a
month in Kunming, China improving her performance in the
bike leg before this time trial. Already a proven cross-country
runner across local schools, Clara possessed the all-round
ability to be an outstanding triathlete. Her preparation paid
off as Clara led from start to finish, winning in a time of 1 hour
11 minutes 56 seconds. We hope that Clara will do well in the
YOG and re-write her personal best.
One of the finest young talents in Singapore and even beyond,
CSC’s Aloysius Yapp represented the Club in both the National
Under 19 Snooker and Pool Championships. Up against the
finest local youths, Aloysius was unfazed even when facing
older opponents. In a field of 25, Aloysius made it to the semifinals
of the Snooker event where he was defeated by finalist
Ho Cheng Kang. In his pet event, Aloysius emerged as the
National Under 19 Pool champion out of 30 players when he
triumphed over Leonard Wan. We look forward earnestly as
Back in October 2009, a group of Golf enthusiasts from different social clubs without any golf courses gathered to moot the
inauguration of the Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament. Five months on, after extensive planning and organising, the first game
was finally held at Warren Golf & Country Club on 5 March 2010.
Singapore Recreation Club was the host club for the first game, with a total of six pioneer clubs participating. It proved to be a
huge success and Chinese Swimming Club would be hosting the second game at Keppel Club on 2 July. The final game would
be held in October, where the first overall champion will emerge.
Patron Cup 2010 cum April Golf Medal Lam Jick Sern
The 2010 Patron Cup was held at NSRCC (Changi) on 15 April and 35 top golfers
qualified. The weather was good initially but towards the end the sky opened to
a heavy downpour. The lucky ones managed to finish all the holes but the rest
could only play up to 15 holes. Upon tabulating the scores for the first 15 holes,
Jack Lim was crowned the champion for the third time in four years. Richard Lim
and Johnny Tan came in second and third respectively.
The players then returned to the Club for the dinner held at Tung Lok Classics.
Some early birds went to the newly-opened FIL Spa Intelligence to enjoy a
This year’s League was held from 13 March to 18 April and two teams were sent for the Men’s D Grade. One team mainly
consisting of youth players was lead by Tennis Convenor Chua Kang Cheh while Koh Chee Hua captained the other team made
up of seasoned players.
The experience of the veteran was vital as they won all their group matches to advance to the semi finals. Unfortunately, they
did not progress beyond that stage. Better luck next time!
CSC Badminton Team Challenge 2010 Lam Jick Sern
The Badminton Sub-Committee initiated the Team Challenge in 2007 as a fun event for players of all ages to play and mingle.
Four years on, it remains a popular competition.
This year, 42 players ranging from 25 to 72 years of age took part in the Challenge, which was held from 5 to 11 April. In the finals
on 11 April, the Alpha team, led by Joseph Sng, defeated the Bravo team, captained by Tan Koon Meng 4-1, to clinch the overall
champion. Court rivalry aside, the players bantered happily over food and drinks.
Each participating player was given a T-shirt and the top two teams received equipment vouchers, all kindly sponsored by
National Badminton Team Challenge 2010 Lam Jick Sern
Seven teams took part in the inaugural Challenge held from 21 to 27 March at Arena Country Club, with Chinese Swimming Club
being one of the teams. Decked from top to bottom in Li-Ning gear, 15 CSC’s best players were sent to represent the Club. The
players showed their pedigree as they won all three group matches to advance to the semi-finals, which they won as well.
Faced with a host of Indonesians and Chinese players from Arena Country Club in the finals, our Club battled bravely and was
unfortunate to lose 3-1. Still, it was a commendable effort by the Club’s local-bred shuttlers!
DISNEY CARTOON FUN Daphne Phoa
“I want to learn how to draw princesses!” and “ I want to draw Tigger!” These were what greeted Paul Lee from
UniqArts and Technologies at the Multi-purpose Room on 19 March 2010. The 15 children who attended this
workshop were all eagerly looking forward to learning how to draw their favourite cartoon characters and
came armed with cartoon books.
Teacher Paul started out by asking the children for their favourite cartoon characters. Mickey & Minnie
Mouse, Tigger, Piglet and Cinderella were some of the cartoon characters that the children learnt to draw.
They also learnt the use of colour pencils and water colours. The children had a fabulous time, even though
they were not able to learn how to draw all of their favourite cartoon characters.
Kudos to the children for their beautiful drawings!
STYLE UPDATE WORKSHOP Wendy Tan
Sally Tang from Divine Image International conducted a Style Update workshop
for our ladies on 21 March 2010. Sally brought along pieces of fabric to
demonstrate the art of colour coordination. The ladies were treated to a visual
display of colours ranging from cool to warm, muted to bright. The ladies
were also taught on the importance of accessories matching, recognising the
different body shapes and applying this knowledge to clothing selection. The
session ended with Sally showing them samples of blouses and answering
their queries. It was a very interesting session indeed!
RETURN OF THE PASTA LOVERS’ WORKSHOP Daphne Phoa
Chef Roy who was the head chef of Delifrance conducted the
workshop on 4 April 2010. Despite it being a long weekend, we had a
good response of 17 participants. Chef Roy demonstrated a mouthwatering
menu of Baked Macaroni with Seafood and Creamy Sauce,
Penne Pasta Vongole, Baked Rice Aglio Olio with Chicken and Turkey
Bacon and last but not least, Spaghetti Pasta Puttanesca. The class was
very attentive and made additional notes throughout the session on
the preparation process provided thoughtfully by Chef Roy. Several
questions were asked and tips were given. Everyone had a wonderful
time tasting the delicious dishes by Chef Roy and couldn’t wait for the
next workshop!
GO GREEN
CARE
FOR OUR
EARTH
The Bleak Future of
Endangered Species
Endangerment is a becoming issue throughout the world.
Although some measures are being taken to help specific
cases of endangerment, the universal problem cannot be
solved until humans protect the natural environments where
endangered species dwell.
Habitat destruction and overexploitation are often the
primary causes for endangered species. Our planet is
continually changing, causing habitats to be altered and
modified. When changes occur at a fast pace, there is little
or no time for individual species to react and adjust to new
circumstances. This can create disastrous results. It may take
centuries to re-grow a forest that was cut down by humans
or destroyed by fire, and many of the world’s severely
threatened animals and plants live in these forests. If the
current rate of forest loss continues, huge quantities of plant
and animal species will disappear.
Due to the trade in animal parts, many species continue
to suffer high rates of exploitation. Unrestricted whaling
during the 20th century is an example of overexploitation,
and the whaling industry brought many species of whales
to extremely low population sizes.
Among other factors are disease, pollution, and limited
distribution (a consequence of other threats) that threaten
various plant and animal species. Often, human activities lie
at the root of most causes of endangerment.
Why Save Endangered Species?
Plants and animals hold medicinal, agricultural, ecological, commercial and aesthetic/recreational value. Endangered species
must be protected and saved so that future generations can experience their presence and value.
Protect Endangered Species For Our Next Generation
Every one of us is part of this world, if we start doing something today, it will all add up! Here are some things you
can do:
1. Do not pour paint or chemicals into the ground or into the gutter. If you do, it will get into the water we drink, and
into the lakes and oceans where it may harm the animals that live in the water and on the shore.
2. Make a compost heap and let worms eat your garbage! Use it to feed your plants instead of chemical fertilizers.
3. Reduce, reuse and recycle! Try to reduce the amount of garbage you throw away. Recycle paper, cardboard, cans, bottles
and plastic. Buy things that don’t come packed in lots of cardboard and plastic; buy bigger quantities – it is cheaper
and there’s less packaging.
Identify The Endangered Species
Out of the 15 species listed below, 12 are in immediate danger of becoming extinct. Identify them. Answers will be published
in the next issue.
Chimpanzee Dolphin Elephant Gorilla Green Pitcher Plant
Siberian Tiger Marine Turtle Whale
Orangutan Giant Panda Polar Bear Rhino Strangler Fig
