The web-accessible Archives database (archives.gallery.ca)<br />
was launched. More than 32,000 records describing the institutional<br />
archives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong> are now available to<br />
the public. This project was supported by the Foundation’s<br />
Circle Patrons.<br />

Study Room<br />
The <strong>Gallery</strong> Study Room was closed until 9 May to serve as storage<br />
area during the space optimization projection undertaken<br />
in the prints and drawings vaults. About 375 visitors were<br />
shown 1,478 individual works in Prints and Drawings, and more<br />
than 300 visited the Photographs Collection.<br />
The <strong>Gallery</strong>’s Research Fellowships were awarded to four<br />
recipients, including two in the area <strong>of</strong> Canadian Art.<br />
Representing a maximum value <strong>of</strong> $30,000 per person, the<br />
<strong>Gallery</strong>’s program encourages and supports advanced research<br />
in the categories <strong>of</strong> Canadian Art, European Art, Modern Art,<br />
Art Conservation, and the History <strong>of</strong> Photography.<br />
The European Art Fellowship was awarded to Anna O.<br />
Marley who will be studying the collection <strong>of</strong> work by British<br />
military draftsmen Thomas Davies and Paul Sandby in connection<br />
with her research on landscape representation in the late<br />
colonial and early national North American home.<br />
Robert Evans will use the <strong>Gallery</strong> photography collections<br />
to analyze 19th-century photographs <strong>of</strong> British cities in their<br />
historical and social contexts in order to explore regimes <strong>of</strong><br />
modernity.<br />
Kristy Holmes will research how Canadian art was defined<br />
and constructed during the late 1960s and early 1970s, with<br />
particular reference to four large-scale international exhibitions<br />
mounted at the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong>.<br />
Julia Pien will investigate the diverse ways in which<br />
Canadian artists have used apparel and the idiom <strong>of</strong> the clothed<br />
body as a source <strong>of</strong> inspiration, humour, and cultural critique.<br />
New research shared virtually<br />
On 1 April the <strong>Gallery</strong> launched the new Canadian Painting in<br />
the Thirties website, which was made possible through the<br />
Canadian Memory Fund with support from the NGC Foundation.<br />
This site provides access to more than 8,000 digitally archived<br />
images, records, and documents.<br />
A new site featuring The Petrobelli Altarpiece by Veronese<br />
was researched and developed, and will be launched in May<br />
<strong>2009</strong>. The site will <strong>of</strong>fer information on the restoration <strong>of</strong> the<br />
work by <strong>Gallery</strong> conservators.<br />
Interns and Fellows<br />
There were three recipients <strong>of</strong> the TD Bank Financial Group<br />
Internships award for <strong>2008</strong>–09. With the goal <strong>of</strong> providing<br />
training opportunities and work experience to young<br />
Canadians, the program supports paid 12-week internships. In<br />
Education and Public Programs, intern Catherine Nadon<br />
developed and piloted a program for post-secondary groups<br />
visiting the <strong>Gallery</strong>. The project will contribute to adult programming<br />
initiatives at the <strong>Gallery</strong>. Art Librarianship TD<br />
Internships were awarded to Marie-Pierre Boucher and Heather<br />
Saunders. Ms Boucher worked on audiovisual materials in the<br />
Library and Archives collections, and Ms Saunders focused on<br />
compiling information on Canadian artists.<br />
