Revenue Generation<br />

Priority: Increase and broaden the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s revenue base.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong> continues to rent its event spaces commercially and<br />

the demand to integrate a visit or tour <strong>of</strong> the collections in<br />

these events continues to increase. In this period, 87% <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fiscal year’s projected revenues were realized, with the projected<br />

revenues at $900,000 and actual revenues at $783,388.<br />

The current and upcoming renovation projects, along with the<br />

unfavourable economic climate, are principal factors in the<br />

slight decrease in revenues.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong>’s Bookstore (including www.ShopNGC.ca) did<br />

not meet its overall projections for this fiscal year due to lower<br />

than anticipated <strong>Gallery</strong> attendance. New <strong>National</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong><br />

products were developed and sold well. The satellite store for<br />

the 1930s special exhibition closed early as a result <strong>of</strong> poor<br />

sales at point <strong>of</strong> exit. Some <strong>of</strong> the exhibition catalogues were<br />

well received, such as the 1930s exhibition catalogue, with<br />

1,185 copies sold during the run <strong>of</strong> the exhibition. The s<strong>of</strong>tcover<br />

version <strong>of</strong> the Bernini exhibition catalogue (English and<br />

French editions) sold out by the closing weekend <strong>of</strong> the exhibition.<br />

Copyright revenues met its overall target with an increased<br />

demand for publications using image reproductions <strong>of</strong> works<br />

in the collection. Negotiation continued regarding the Status<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Artist Act with CARFAC/RAAV.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong> negotiated more than $354,000 in media<br />

sponsorship for <strong>2008</strong>–09.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong> increased its member/donor households to<br />

11,211 in <strong>2008</strong>–09, an increase <strong>of</strong> 4.5% from last year.<br />

The <strong>National</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> Foundation raised more<br />

than $2,790,000 in philanthropic gifts, a slight increase over<br />

last year. Additionally, it negotiated $659,540 in financial and<br />

in-kind sponsorships, and it directly contributed another<br />

$100,000 as presenting sponsor <strong>of</strong> the exhibition The 1930s: The<br />

Making <strong>of</strong> “The New Man.”<br />
