• Installation <strong>of</strong> remote surveillance for the art storage<br />

warehouse;<br />

• Replacement <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing at the <strong>Canada</strong> Pavilion in Venice,<br />

Italy; and<br />

• Raising the guardrail and adding a handrail to the ramped<br />

stairwell in the Concourse.<br />

In addition to these, the <strong>Gallery</strong> began Phase I <strong>of</strong> an extensive<br />

window replacement at the main facility at a cost <strong>of</strong> approximately<br />

$3.6 million. This phase included skylights in public<br />

areas, including the Concourse and some gallery spaces. At the<br />

same time, high-access equipment in these spaces (skylight<br />

trolleys and lifelines) are being refurbished and upgraded.<br />

These projects in public areas added new elements <strong>of</strong> risk<br />

to our staff and visitors. To mitigate these risks and continue<br />

public operations during the implementation <strong>of</strong> these projects,<br />

the <strong>Gallery</strong> also installed extensive hoarding and overhead<br />

protection in these spaces. Additionally, new door plugs were<br />

designed and installed that will continue to be used to isolate<br />

gallery spaces from public circulation within the building when<br />

undergoing construction activities.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong> continued its general cyclical maintenance<br />

plans and repairs in gallery spaces, which included the Garden<br />

Court, Water Court, a European gallery, and the Canadian galleries.<br />

Restoration and treatment <strong>of</strong> granite tiles at the main<br />

facility continued with the Garden Court, Concourse and<br />

Rotunda completed.<br />

The ongoing concrete monitoring program continued with<br />

the annual inspection and condition report completed as<br />

planned, with no significant changes or deterioration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

extensive concrete elements at the NGC.<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong> employs sound and efficient governance and stewardship<br />

practices that facilitate the alignment <strong>of</strong> resources<br />

with priorities and full accountability to Canadians for<br />

results.<br />

Priority: Strengthen governance.<br />

Information Technology<br />

The <strong>Gallery</strong>’s ability to access and use its IT resources was<br />

enhanced in <strong>2008</strong>–09 through the successful implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the planned replacement <strong>of</strong> all the network hardware,<br />

improvements to the efficiency <strong>of</strong> the backup processes, and<br />

the life-cycle replacement <strong>of</strong> three central servers.<br />

Policies, Procedures, and Systems are in Place to Operate in an<br />

Efficient and Effective Manner<br />

In <strong>2008</strong>–09, the <strong>Gallery</strong> participated in an initiative with the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Canadian Heritage and the other national<br />

museums to develop a stronger performance measurement<br />

framework. The result was an outline that reflects the different<br />

mandates and provides some common outcomes and performance<br />

indicators. The initiative, which will continue over<br />

the planning period, will help demonstrate value for Canadians<br />

and the importance <strong>of</strong> ongoing public funding to the national<br />

museums.<br />

Access to Information and Privacy Requests (ATIP)<br />

Various documents were developed and made available to<br />

staff on the Intranet to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> Access to Information<br />

and Privacy issues: Policy and Procedures for computer equipment,<br />

email, Internet access and electronic documents, NGC<br />

ATIP Policy and Procedures, Fact Sheet on ATIP for Government<br />

employees, Email Etiquette, and Paper Shredding. All staff<br />

mandatory training on ATIP was also provided to 250 <strong>of</strong> 300<br />

staff. The number <strong>of</strong> ATIP requests received (27) surpassed the<br />

number received last year (10). Four <strong>of</strong> these requests resulted<br />

in the review <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> pages <strong>of</strong> documents.<br />
