training workshop and Head of<br />
Scientific Division, Senegal<br />
National Commission for<br />
UNESCO, and Dr. Ismaila Diallo, representative of Minister of Higher Education and<br />
Scientific Research, Senegal, briefed about the objectives of the training workshop.<br />
Following were the objectives of the training workshop:<br />

To provide hands-on training to the participants for improving their skills for<br />
independently maintaining and repairing the scientific instruments;<br />
To update the trainees' knowledge on changing technologies in scientific<br />
equipments;<br />
<br />
<br />
To acquaint the participants with the functioning of scientific instruments<br />
through need-based training, as well as documentation in the repair and<br />
maintenance of scientific equipments;<br />
To facilitate information-exchange among scientists, researchers,<br />
technicians, service engineers and industrialists of enhancing the existing<br />
scientific capacity.<br />
The closing ceremony was attended by M. Aliou Ly, Head of the Education Division,<br />
Senegal National Commission for UNESCO, and Mr. Serigne Amadou Ndiaye, Dean<br />
Faculty of Science, University ChiekhAnta Diop, Dakar, Senegal.<br />
Recognizing the necessity to<br />
develop/enhance indigenous capacity<br />
and technical workforce, a proposal<br />
was discussed to establish an<br />
independent centre for repair and<br />
maintenance of sophisticated scientific<br />
instruments in Senegal; and ISESCO<br />
and COMSATS agreed to undertake a<br />
follow-up project in this regard.<br />
