COMSATS.<br />
On invitation from the<br />
organizing institutions,<br />
the meeting was<br />
attended by 18<br />
scientists/experts<br />
representing 9 scientific<br />
organizations, belonging<br />
to 8 developing<br />
countries. Three Centres<br />
of Excellence of<br />
COMSATS namely,<br />
ICCBS; National<br />
Research Centre (NRC)<br />
- Egypt; and Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) - Sudan, were<br />
represented in the meeting. Other participating institutions included: Department of<br />
Science Laboratory Technology of the Federal Polytechnic - Nigeria; Institute of<br />
Fundamental Studies - Sri Lanka; Department of Biochemistry and Molecular<br />
Biology, University of Dhaka - Bangladesh; Department of Biology, Ege University -<br />
Turkey; and Lorestan University of Medical Sciences - Iran. COMSATS Headquarters<br />
sponsored travel for two of the participants, one each from IRCC - Sudan and NRC -<br />
Egypt. During the meeting, thorough deliberations were made by participating<br />
organizations on areas of their mutual interest.<br />
Following are some of the key decisions and outcomes of the meeting:<br />

An agreement was reached as to the title of the joint research project to be<br />
undertaken by the Group-members: “Phytochemical and Pharmacological<br />
Studies on Medicinal Plants and Standardization of Herbal Plants of Indus<br />
and Nile Valleys”.<br />
ICCBS will organize two workshops complementing the theme of the joint<br />
research project on the topics of ‘Combinatorial Synthesis of Natural Product<br />
based Libraries’ and ‘Structural Biology’, during March and July 2011,<br />
respectively. In this regard, assistance may be sought from COMSATS.<br />
A website for the Thematic Research Group will be developed based on the<br />
feedback received from its members.<br />

The 2 meeting of this Group will be hosted by Ege University, during<br />
September 2012, in Denizli-Turkey.<br />
ICCBS offered five scholarships<br />
at ICCBS for COMSATS’<br />
member States; three for postdoctoral<br />
research and two for<br />
technical training.<br />
The establishment of this<br />
Thematic Research Group and<br />
its membership was endorsed by<br />
means of an MoU. Apart from the<br />
