Foundation Meeting of the Thematic Research Group on ‘Climate<br />

Change and Environmental Protection’, Beijing-China<br />

The foundation meeting of COMSATS’ Thematic Research Group on ‘Climate<br />

Change and Environmental Protection’ was jointly held by COMSATS and its Centre<br />

of Excellence in China, the International Centre for Climate and Environment<br />

Sciences (ICCES), on November 20, <strong>2010</strong>, in Beijing, China. The meeting was<br />

chaired by Prof. Dr. Lin Zhaohui, Director ICCES, whereas COMSATS Headquarters<br />

was represented by Engr. Farhan Ansari, Assistant Director (Programmes)<br />

COMSATS. The meeting was held at the Foreign Experts Building in Beijing, in<br />

conjunction with the 9 International Workshop on Climate and Environmental<br />

Change: Challenges for Developing Countries (November 17-19, <strong>2010</strong>).<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2010</strong><br />

A brief opening ceremony was held<br />

at the beginning of the meeting. Prof.<br />

Jiang Zhu, Deputy Director of the<br />

Institute of Atmospheric Physics<br />

(IAP), China, and Mr. Syed Ali Tallae,<br />

Counsellor Technical Affairs of<br />

Embassy of Pakistan in China, were<br />

amongst the distinguished guests<br />

who attended the opening ceremony<br />

of the meeting. Prof. Jiang Zhu is<br />

also a member of COMSATS’<br />

Technical Advisory Committee<br />

(TAC).<br />

In order to initiate the joint research<br />

activities under this Thematic<br />

Research Group and to expand its<br />

membership, representatives of the<br />

organizations working in the area of climate sciences in the Member States of<br />

COMSATS and other developing countries were invited to participate in the meeting.<br />

Representatives from 13 scientific institutions from 9 developing countries, China,<br />

India, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Zimbabwe, attended<br />

the meeting. Besides ICCES, which is the designated Lead Centre of the Group, two<br />

other Centres of Excellence of COMSATS were represented in the meeting. These<br />

were the Iranian Research Organization for Science & Technology (IROST), Iran, and<br />

COMSATS Institute of<br />

Information Technology<br />

(CIIT), Pakistan.<br />
