During the 13 Meeting of COMSATS Coordinating Council, held on 12-13 May <strong>2010</strong>,<br />

at Trieste, Italy, CIIT offered 100 graduate/postgraduate scholarships for students<br />

from COMSATS’ member countries.<br />

National/International Events Organized by CIIT<br />

Launching of the Centennial Chapter of MobileMonday in Pakistan: On April 19,<br />

<strong>2010</strong>, the centennial chapter of MobileMonday<br />

(MoMo) Global was launched and housed at the<br />

Centre for Advanced Studies and<br />

Telecommunication (CAST) of CIIT. The<br />

chapter aims to bring together the leading<br />

companies and personalities related to the<br />

Pakistani telecommunication business,<br />

enabling them to: join the global family of<br />

MoMo; exchange ideas; find resources; and,<br />

most importantly, to participate in the<br />

development of the mobile industry and mobile<br />

eco-system in Pakistan.<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2010</strong><br />

First Ceremony of ‘COMSATS Institute Medals for Innovation’ (CIMI): CIIT held<br />

the first ever award-distribution ceremony of ‘COMSATS Institute Medals for<br />

th<br />

Innovation’ (CIMI), on 24 May <strong>2010</strong>, in Islamabad. The awards were given to<br />

acknowledge and promote innovation among scientists from various fields of science<br />

and technology, including mathematics, computer science, and electrical<br />

engineering. Out of 44 nominations received, eight individual innovations qualified for<br />

the award. The winners were awarded Certificates of Merit along with gold medallions<br />

and cash prizes of upto Rs. 100,000.<br />

Second South Asian International Conference:<br />

CIIT organized the 2 South<br />

Asian International Conference – SAICON <strong>2010</strong> – under the auspices of South Asian<br />

Chapter of the Academy for Global Business Advancement, on July 21-23, <strong>2010</strong>, in<br />

Bhurban, Pakistan. The theme of this international event was ‘Nurturing Innovation,<br />

Entrepreneurship, Investments and Public-private Partnership in Global<br />

Environment’.<br />

Second International Symposium on Biomedical Materials: In July <strong>2010</strong>, CIIT in<br />

association with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology of Mayo<br />

nd<br />

Hospital, King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore, organized the 2<br />

International Symposium on “Biomedical Materials”. The papers presented on this<br />

occasion consisted of a wide variety of subjects, such as nanotechnology – advanced<br />

materials interface; bi-metal clad wave guided bio-sensors; novel classes of anti-viral<br />

and anti-cancer agents; biosensors based on microbes; stem-cell technology; porous<br />

bio-ceramics; novel biomaterials; and glass ionomer dental nano-composites.<br />
