COMSATS’ Participation in the International Training Workshop in<br />
China<br />
Mr. Nisar Ahmad, Sr. Assistant Director (Systems) of COMSATS Secretariat attended<br />
the 'International Training Workshop on ‘Information Technology and its Application',<br />

in Shanghai, China, from 10 to 30 June <strong>2010</strong>. The Workshop was organized by the<br />
Ministry of Science and Technology of China as a part of its international cooperation<br />
with developing countries. Fifteen participants from seven countries, including<br />
Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam attended the<br />
Workshop. Country reports were presented by the participants, one for each country.<br />
Pakistan's country-report was jointly<br />
presented by Mr. Ahmad and Mr. Attiqu-ur-<br />
Rehman of COMSATS Institute of<br />
Information Technology (CIIT). It included<br />
an overview of the status of Information<br />
Technology (IT) in Pakistan with a brief<br />
introduction of COMSATS.<br />
The training workshop comprised various<br />
lectures and training sessions conducted<br />
by subject experts, followed by question<br />
and answer sessions. The topics of<br />
lectures delivered included: 'City<br />
Informatization Development and Future';<br />
'An introduction of Information Security System'; 'Introduction to Optical Fiber and<br />
Optical Fiber Cables'; 'Basis of Strategic IS Planning'; 'ERP in China'; and ‘Easypano<br />
Software & City8 Street View System'.<br />

In addition to these lectures and orientation sessions, visits to<br />
organizations/institutions, working for developing IT-related solutions were arranged.<br />
These included visits to Shanghai Super-Computer Centre (SSC), HANGTONG<br />
Group, as well as ShanghaiAnimation Valley.<br />
The Workshop provided a good opportunity to share new ideas and technologies<br />
being developed and tested. These included: SMART Grid, GIS for water<br />
conservation, smart chair, anti-temper software, hardware-security, internal IT audit,<br />
E-court, mobile court, remote computers, UNITAR, Shanghai Open Student Lab<br />
(OSL), and Shanda Literature web-portal.<br />
