"M^ Candel of Consolidated Thoatro Services,
Don Mills, Ont.. was in town in mid-
July and while here announced that Louis
Litchinsky would be taking over the management
of the local operation for his company.
Louis, formerly of Canadian Theatres,
is well-known in the film industry,
having been in distribution for about 30
years.
The second annual Canfilm barbecue was
held Saturday night, July 19. in the ski lodge
at Happy Valley, a short drive out on the
wes.t side of town. The weather was ideal,
the company convivial, the food delicious
and the music just right—all of the necessary
ingredients for a festive evening. About
40 people from various levels of the industry
met and enjoyed themselves. Congratulations
and a big vote of thanks go to those
many people responsible for organizing the
outing.
After more than 20 years in the film industry,
all spent in the shipping department
with Paramount Films Service, John Fay
has decided to go into another line of work,
July 25 was Johns last day with the shipping
sheets and glue pot and Monday, July
28, he started his new career as a bank messenger.
John will be missed by his co-workers
and we all wish him the very best in his
new job.
the crew (Bryan McBean. your correspondent's
son) took time out for an ocean
dive. The local adventurers hope to make
this an annual outing and even now are "at
the drawing board" busy on a new "craft."
Mike is involved in his own underwater
photography and salvage company in this
city. Better luck next year, fellows!
Word has been received of the permanent
closing of another theatre, the Pastime in
Lastend, Sask., another victim of rising costs
and the vicious battle for the entertainment
dollar.
A former employee of Empire Universal
Films, Walter Petrigo, has added another
honor to his steadily growing list of accomplishments.
Waiter's photograph of {he
"Wild Horse Race" at a previous Calgary
Stampede was chosen to adorn a stamp issued
by the federal government to honor
Calgary's 100th birthday. This is the first
time a stamp has honored any city other
than a provincial capital, so Calgary and
Walter can feel justly proud.
Bert Cooper, formerly of Warner Bros.,
dropped into the exchange building to say
"hello" to those still toiling there. He is
happily employed with a housing development
corporation and it certainly must
agree with him. He is looking very well.
In spite of the pain, misery and inconvenience
of his broken elbow, Verne Haraldson,
branch manager of United Artists
Corp., is as happy as anyone can be under
the circumstances. The reason for his happiness
is the stand-in-line business that "The
Return of the Pink Panther" is doing at
Calgary Place Cinema 2. The very good
grosses at the Chinook on "The Wind and
the Lion" are an added cause for joy.
Even though there has not been much
publicity about it, the big news is that Paul
Newman is in our very own town, right
here amongst us mortal people! The reason,
Mike Quinn, former underwater photographer,
animal trainer and handler for Walt shot in this area . . . The lure of Elvis Pres-
of course, is his new movie which is being
Disney Productions in Hollywood, took time ley never seems to dim nor wane and the
off from his regular job to join in the fun latest "blurb" for Elvis is a travel tour promotion
called "Elvis Presley Special" to Las
and adventure of the annual Nanaimo to
Vancouver Bathtub Race. Three co-workers Vegas. This is a package trip including air
went along with Mike on this first try at fare from our town to Las Vegas and return,
this novel event and all reported a fantastic four nights' accommodation at a new hotel
time. There were over 200 boats—tubs, that along the strip, meals, lounge show and
is—entered in the race and although this cocktails, a guided tour and the big drawing
city's entry came in 104th, Mike was wellpleased
with the effort. As he pointed out, of this sells for just over
card, tickets to the Elvis Presley show. All
$250.00!
this was their first try and even some of the
Holiday time, with people traveling back
experienced crews (about 27) didn't even
and forth across the country, always brings
make it out of the harbor. Mike and one of
ipleasant surprises and the nicest, happiest
surprise came recently when former Calgarian
Mike Brager called to say "hello."
Mike, with Universal Films, now makes his
home in Toronto and was back here for one
.short week. Accompanying Mike was his
youngest daughter Miriam, who had her first
look at the places where the Brager family
lived and worked. Miriam was too young to
remember much of this city when the family
moved east and Mike thoroughly enjoyed
showing Miriam around. Mike's many
friends in western Canada will be pica.sed
to know that all is well with the Brager
family.
That genial gentleman from the North.
Norman Lowe of Fort Nelson, was in town
for several days and dropped into the exchange
to take care of some dates for his
theatres.
The month of June saw the
is to be hoped it will be in late May, so they
The two top volley ball teams in the
world, the champion Japanese and the Russians,
played a series in this city, which
prompted Dolphin manager Frank Marshall.
who is a veteran trainer of top sports figures
in British Columbia, to remark: "TTie game
15 years since it was known as the 'mating
