CALGARY
gtudio 82 on Calgary's Heritage Drive
brought back "The Pom Pom Girls."
This is the film that set a North American
record by running in town for over a year
in its first engagement.
Edmonton will welcome stage and screen
star Glynis Johns this coming week when
she arrives to star in the Citadel Theatre's
opening production, "Harold and Maude."
She also will headline "Cause Celebre" by
Sir Terrence Rattigan which will be presented
as Citadel's fourth main stage production.
Ms. Johns' hiring had created some
controversy when a protest was launched
against hiring foreign stars at the theatre.
The hiring policy was subsequently endorsed
by Canadian Actors' Equity Ass'n and so
Albertans will have the opportunity of enjoying
Ms. John's talent.
After a run of 33 weeks Warner Bros.'
"The Goodbye Girl" will be leaving the
screen at Calgary's Towne Cinema.
Calgary has taken the latest United Artists
release. "Revenge of the Pink Panther."
to its movie-going heart and is turning out
to see Peter Sellers' latest effort as Inspector
Clouseau. UA branch manager Ralph
Zelickson happily reports that the same
situation holds true in Edmonton and the
boxoffice is overwhelmed. Isn't that a pleasant
predicament to be in?
In a fund-raising venture, the Cerebral
Palsy Ass'n in Alberta is presenting a completely
new travel and adventure film series
in the Jubilee Auditorium this season, starting
Friday (30) and running through April
24. There will be eight films in the series
featuring Colonel John Craig who is an
Academy Award winner. Presentations will
be on different days of the week and there
will be two screenings each night.
Just when it seemed that problems in the
construction industry in Alberta were all
solved and the sites were humming again.
up went another set of picket lines on various
projects. This time the protesters are
the steelworkers and. although an agreement
has been reached, their union has come up
with a new approach: the picket lines stay
up until the agreement has been ratified.
Apparently some one must believe in the
old adage. "There's many a slip 'twi.xt the
cup and the lip." In the meantime most
major projects, and many smaller ones, are
not working.
George D. Repka, 28 years of age, was
killed in an automobile accident just north
of Grande Prairie, Alberta July 26. His
passenger. Dave M. Willis. Liberal candidate
for the federal Peace River riding, also
was killed. Repka had been involved actively
in politics since 1973 and was working
with Willis in his campaign for the next
federal election. Repka was involved in
well known in our business. Friends of the
Repkas will all join in sending sympathy
and condolences to the family at this sad
time.
On holidays—and enjoying it close to
home— is International Film Distributors
branch manager Cy Davies.
July was the busiest month of the year so
far for the Alberta Motion Picture Censor
Board—a total of 55 features were screened
and classified. There were 12 Family features,
six in the Adult group, ten classified
as Adult Not Suitable for Children and the
remaining 27 categorized as Restricted
Adult. Of the entire 55. only one carries a
warning— "The Holy Mountain" (New Cinema
Enterprises) with "grotesque and violent
images may be disturbing." A total of 19
distributors submitted films for classification.
Some of the newer names include
Creswin Film Distributors. Frontier Amusements.
Livince Investments Ltd. and Zoni
Films Ltd. As usual films came from numerous
countries including Britain, China, India,
Germany, France, Italy and Australia
as well, of course, as our domestic features.
Actress Linda Blair of "The Exorcist,"
charged with possession of marijuana, will
appear in Calgary provincial court Monday
(18). Calgary RCMP say Blair was arrested
in a routine check by customs officials
at Calgary International Airport August
7 and charged with possession of two
marijuana joints. Blair apparently arrived
in Calgary on a flight from Spokane, Wash.,
about 10 p.m.
Bev Holman. Astral Films, has announced
her departure from that company, effective
immediately. After a few days of rest and
rehab Bev will enter a new field of endeavour.
Bev will be missed by her friends and
we all join in wishing her a happy future
in her chosen career. Keep in touch. Bev.
