Gladson to Try Again
To Save Ind. Theatre
INDIANAPOLIS—G€ne Gladson, theatre
lover whose initial effort was to "save"
the Lyric Theatre now a parking lot— is
now hoping to "save" the Fox, a 1.400-seat
auditorium downtown at New York and
Illinois streets. And Gladson has picked up
a fellow-enthusiast for this latest project-
James Tillett, manager of the Circle Theatre.
Before the Fox went dark, it was used for
burlesque and porno films, but if concerned
citizens help finance the rescue of the Fox,
it would be used for ballet, opera, country
and western, special films, community theatre.
Las Vegas acts, jazz programs, concerts,
lectures,
vaudeville and so on.
Tillett said the amount of entertainment
to be booked is "endless." and said the pair
wanted to know if there was any support for
the proposed project. They want to create a
management group to own and operate the
building.
The property is for sale for $450,000.
which includes two storage spaces, an adjoining
hotel and a lounge. Total investment
to save the house would be less than $1
million, because the interior is considered
to be in fairly good shape.
Two X-Raled Theatres
Denied City Licenses
INDIANAPOLLS—Two adult theatre
ventures in neighborhood locations of Indianapolis
have been notified they will not
receive city licenses in 1979. One affects
the now-open Rivoli Theatre, at .3155 E.
St.. 10th and the other involves a Chicago
firm which sought to reopen the Festival
Theatre at 5507 E. Washington,
Charles Gebuhr. city license administrator,
said that Charles Chulchian, owner of
the Rivoli, was notified by letter that his
application for a 1979 theatre license has
been denied. Gebuhr said his main reason
for tinning down the application for the
Rivoli is a report from the Indianapolis police
department that ten arrests were made
at the theatre within a period of three days
in November.
Gebuhr said the city has received letters
from residents and businessmen charging
that the theatre attracts a bad element to the
community and is not conducive to good
economic growth in the neighborhood.
Gebuhr said the recent request of a Chicago
firm to obtain a license to re-open the
darkened Festival Theatre at 5507 E. Washington
also was denied. The Festival was
Cfeve Foster and Gary Pulver of National
Screen Serv'ce and Gene Krull and
shut down more than a year ago when its
Ken Lang of National Theatre Supply were
license was revoked after the arrest of the
in Florida to attend a combined NSS/NTS
manager and projectionist on obscene conduct
charges. In a letter to Steven sales meeting Jan. 13-16.
Toushin.
president '^of the Festival Theatre Corp. in
Chicaeo. G-buhr sa'd the licence application
was being denied because the corporation
owes back local property taxes and the location
is not properly zoned for an adult
theatre use.
The city originally revoked the Festival
Theatre license in September 1977 after a
city vice squad officer arrested the two employees
on obscene conduct charges. The
corporation later filed court action against
the city to prevent the revocation of its
license, but the case was dropped after being
venued to Johnson County Circuit Court.
